King's Men's Basketball Team Loses Heartbreaker to Purchase College at Stevens Tip-Off Tournament

Hoboken, NJ-- King's senior point guard Kyle Stackhouse scored 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the King's College men's  basketball team dropped a tough 72-70 decision to Purchase College in the consolation game of the Stevens Institute Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon.

With :32 left in the game Stackhouse connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game 70-70. The Panthers (1-1) ran the clock down to :02 when Jake Stevens III missed a jumper, but Christopher Fazio fouund the rebound and layed it in as time expire to win the game.

Holding a slim 41-40 lead with 15:07 to play in the game the Monarchs (1-2) started a 13-2 run that was capped by a steal and layup by sophomore Kyle Hammonds that opened up a 54-42 lead. Purchase answered with 22-7 run to build the lead to five 65-60 with just 3:02 to play.

King's jumped out early scoring the first seven points of the game, but the Panthers answered with a 18-6 run to lead 18-13 midway through the first half. 

Elon Howard made a layup with 2:55 to put the Panthers up 31-27, but the Monarchs closed the first half with an 8-4 run to tie the game at 35 at the break.

Hammonds scored 17 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Nick Reisig chipped in 12 points and seven boards. Stackhouse also added eight rebounds and shot 12-of-13 from the charity stripe.

John Pressley led all scorers with 20 points.  Stevens III also reached double figures for Purchase with 13 points.  Fazio chipped in 10 rebounds.

The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Albright for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
