KING'S CAGERS FALL TO CMU IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME OF CONSOLATION GAME

 

WILKES-BARRE --  Carnegie Mellon University outscored host King's College 13-7 in the second overtime period as the Tartans captured third place in the PNC Bank/Monarch Classic with a 112-106 victory Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.  Meanwhile, Susquehanna University captured the team championship with a 71-67 victory over Penn State Harrisburg.

With the win, CMU improved to 4-4 while King's slipped to 4-5.

The Monarchs trailed 81-74 with after Rashaun Riley hit a pair of foul shots for CMU with 1:09 remaining. The Monarchs responded with a 9-2 run to take a 84-83 lead on a lay-up by Kyle Stackhouse and a pair of foul shots from Tim O'Shea with 0:22 to go. CMU, however, took the lead right back when Chris Manoli buried a three-pointer from the wing to give the Tartans a 86-84 advantage with 0:11 on the clock. After King's called a timeout with 0:09 remaining Keyton Winder was fouled attempting a bucket underneath the basket at the final buzzer and the Monarch freshman was awarded two foul shots. Winder calmly sank both to tie the game at 86-86, sending the contest into overtime.

After each team scored 13 points in the extra session, the squads entered the second overtime period deadlocked at 99-99.  The Tartans scored the first five points to take a 104-99 lead before Stackhouse scored a lay-up for the Monarchs.  But CMU stretched the lead to a 106-101 with 3:15 to play after a Riley jumper. King's closed to 108-105 on another driving lay-up by Stackhouse with 0:36 to play but the Tartans made four straight foul shots to seal the victory.

King's was paced by Winder with 25 points and six rebounds while Fiorino added 17 points and five assists to gain a spot on the all-tournament team. Stackhouse and Tim O'Shea tallied 15 points each while Kyle Hammonds chipped in with 13.

All-tournament selection John Duhring led Carnegie Mellon with 24 points while Manoli added 22. Marshall Massengale and Riley netted 17 and 16 respectively while Asad Meghani scored 12 while Joe Kromka chipped in with 10 points.



SUSQUEHANNA CLAIMS TEAM TITLE WITH 71-67 VICTORY OVER PENN STATE HARRISBURG

 

WILKES-BARRE – Susquehanna University overcame a 10-0 hole to start the game and a 36-33 halftime deficit as the Crusaders posted a 71-67 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in the championship game of the PNC Bank/Monarch Classic Saturday at King's College, Wilkes-Barre.

With the win, Susquehanna improved to 4-4 while PSU Harrisburg slipped to 6-3.

Spenser Spencer earned most valuable player honors with 24 points and five rebounds in the title game while J.T. Wilson earned a spot on the all-tournament team with 14 points and 10 boards. Harley Sellinger scored 13 points with 10 rebounds while Wally Rutecki chipped in with nine points and seven boards.

Penn State Harrisburg was paced by all-tournament selection William Doyle with 20 points and three assists while Amani Glenn tallied 15 points and six rebounds. Jordan Gatchell scored eight points with seven boards while Kenton Alston earned a spot on the all-tournament team after registering seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the title game.
