Penn State Harrisburg Upends King's, Will Play Susquehanna for PNC Bank/Monarch Classic Title on Saturday

PENN STATE HARRISBURG UPENDS KING'S, ADVANCES TO PLAY SUSQUEHANNA IN PNC BANK/MONARCH CLASSIC
 
WILKES-BARRE — Penn State Harrisburg raced out to a 19-6 lead and never trailed as the visiting Lions posted a 87-81 victory over host King's College in the opening round of the PNC Bank/Monarch Classic Friday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.  

With the win Penn State improved to 6-2 on the year and will face Susquehanna University in the tournament championship game Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Susquehanna was a 66-51 winner over Carnegie Mellon in the other first-round pairing. King's (4-4) will meet Carnegie Mellon in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.

Penn State Harrisburg came flying out of the gates, scoring  the first six points and 13 of the first 15 in the contest, building a 13-2 lead at the 16:08 mark following bucket by William Doyle and a pair of foul shots from Jordan Gatchell. The Lions dictated the pace of the game and eventually built a 19 points-lead when Dole buried a three-pointer to put Penn State Harrisburg on top 35-16 with 6:30 remaining in the opening stanza. King's attempted to whittle away at the lead and clawed back to within 42-33 at the half after Keyton Winder converted a pair of foul shots with 0:32 on the clock. The Lions torched the nets in the first half, making good on 55.2 (16-29) percent of their shots, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.
 
In the second half the Monarchs continued to trim the lead and eventually cut the score to 59-56 on five straight point by Mike Foster and a three-pointer from Matt Fiorino with 10:20 to the clock.   But the Lions remained composed and used a 14-7 run to push the margin to 73-63 following a pair of charity tosses from Kenton Alston and a bucket by Steve Jones.  
 
King's closed to within 73-68 on a back-to-back three-pointer and lay-up by Kyle Hammonds with 3:55 to go.  But the Lions responded with a decisive 9-3 spurt to push the lead to 82-71 with 0:58 to play following a three-pointer by Alston and a pair of foul shots from Gatchell.
 
Penn State Harrisburg used a balanced attack, placing five players in double-figures. Alson led the way with 19 points and five rebounds while Amani Glenn and Gatchell added 15 points apiece. Jones and Doyle chipped in with 12 points each.
 
King's was led by Kyke Stackhouse with 15 points while Hammonds and Matt Fiorino netted 14 each. Foster contributed 13 while Nick Reisig pulled down eight boards and dished out eight assists.

SUSQUEHANNA DEFEATS CARNEGIE MELLON TO REACH TOURNEY FINAL
 
WILKES-BARRE – The Susquehanna University men's basketball team opened a 34-16 lead at the half and never looked back as the Crusaders posted a 66-51 victory over Carnegie Mellon University in the opening round of the PNC Bank/Monarch Classic Friday night at King's College, Wilkes-Barre.

With the win, Susquehanna improved to 3-4 on the year and advanced to Saturday's 3:00 p.m. championship game against the winner of the King's-Penn State Harrisburg semi-final.

Susquehanna led comfortably throughout the game and the Tartans would draw no closer than 13 points in the second half.

T.J. Wilson led Susquehanna with 11 points and four rebounds while Spenser Spencer added 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. Harley Sellinger chipped in with eight points and four boards.

Carnegie Mello was paced by Joe Kromka with 19 points and six rebounds while John Duhring added seven points and two assists.  The Tartans will play in Saturday's 1:00 p.m. consolation game.
