KING'S SOFTBALL OPENS FREEDOM CONFERENCE SLATE WITH DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AGAINST MANHATTANVILLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team opened up defense of its 2010 Freedom Conference championship with a doubleheader split against visiting Manhattanville College in a rematch up last season's conference tournament opener.

King's won the first game 5-2 before Manhattanville came back to take the nightcap 2-0.

In the opener, King's fell behind 2-0 but tied the game up in the fourth inning. Annie Erndl singled and moved to second on a bunt by Rebecca Taylor. After a single by Amanda Cardone gave King's runners at first and third, Kayla Rutkoski and Erin Beane followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

King's added three more runs in the fifth inning when Jenn Harnischfeger and Gretchen Tholen both singled and Kaitlin Siegfried walked. Erndl delivered a RBI single and Taylor drove in another run on an infield out. Cardone added a run-scoring single to bring the score to 5-2.

Erndle was threw inning pitcher, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits  with four stikeouts in seven innings. Cardone led King's with a 3-for-3 effort while Erndl and Tholen added two hits each.

In the nightcap, the game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Lindsay Zekus drilled a one-out solo home run over the centerfield fence to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead. Manhattanville added an unearned run in the top-of-the-seventh to end the scoring.

Brittany Haight took the loss for King's, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with two strikeouts. Harnischfeger and Brittany Hildebrand had the only hits of the game for King's.

King's will next travel to face traditional national power Ithaca College Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
