King's Softball Falls to Eastern 5-1 as Game-Two is Rained Out

KING'S SOFTBALL DROPS OPENER TO EASTERN 5-1, GAME-TWO RAINED OUT

WILKES-BARRE -- Visiting Eastern University broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the seventh inning as the Eagles posted a 5-1 victory over host King's College in a Freedom Conference softball game Saturday at the Betzler Athletic Complex. Game-two was rained out after King's built a 3-2 lead in the first inning.

With the loss, King's slipped to 9-8 and 5-4 in Freedom Conference play wjhile Easternn improved to 14-11 and 2-7 in league games.
 
King's and Eastern were deadlocked in a 0-0 tie until the Lady Monarchs pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rebecca Taylor led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Annie Erndl then followed with a run scoring single up the middle to give King's a 1-0 lead.

Eastern, however, immediately answered in the top half of the sixth inning  when Jackie Gangemi doubled and scored on another double by Janelle Fair.

After King's failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, Eastern scored four big runs in the decisive seventh inning. Jaime Schwartz led off with a single and moved to second on a but by Jessica Baker.  Samantha Terenzoni then stroked a RBI double before Gangemi followed with a run scoring single to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. After Fair singled, Maggie McGowan stroked a two-run single to push the score to 5-1.

King's attempted to respond in its final at-bats by getting two runners on base but the Lady Monarchs were unable too add to its run total as Eastern walked away with the victory.

The Lady Monarchs managed just four hits in the game. Amanda Cardone doubled while Taylor, Erndl, and Kayla Rutkoski each singled.

Erndl pitched well until the seventh inning and finished the game by allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

Fair was outstanding for Eastern, allowing four hits while striking out 10 King's batters.

Game-two will be rescheduled at a time and date to be determined.
