King's Softball Picks Up Important Sweep of Cross-Town Rival Wilkes

KING'S SOFTBALL POSTS IMPORTANT FREEDOM CONFERENCE SWEEP OVER WILKES
 
WILKES-BARRE --  The King's College softball team posted a key doubleheader sweep of cross-town rival Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference matchup Sunday at the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the first game 10-3  before taking the nightcap 8-0 in five innings. With the sweep, King's improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 2-12 and 2-4 in league games.

In the opener Wilkes jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second inning. In the third inning, the Lady Colonels added two more runs thanks to a solo home run by  Jackie Follweiler and a RBI single from Jess Paveletz.

King's knotted the score with a three-run bottom half of the third. Brittany Baynes drew a one-out walk and moved to second on an infield out Baynes then scored on a single from Kaitlin Siegfried and Rebecca Taylor and Annie Erndl drew back-to-back walks to loaded the bases. Amanada Cardone delivered a run-scoring single before Kayla Rutkoski drew a bases loaded walk to force in Taylor form third.

King's added three more runs in the fourth when Jenn Harsnischfeger singled up the middle and Baynes and Gretchen Tholen both came up with bunt singles to load the bases. Siegfried followed with a two-run single before Cardone delivered another RBI single to give the Lady Monarchs a 6-3 lead.

King's sealed the opener with four more runs in the sixth, on the strength of a RBI double by Erin Beane and run scoring singles from Taylor and Rutkoski.

Cardone led King's in the opener by going 3-for-4 with two RBI while Tholen was 3-for-5. Harnischfeger, Baynes, and Siegfried added two hits apiece. Erndl was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Cindy Diemer and Paveletz led Wilkes with two hits each. Lindsay Behrenshausen was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 15 hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, King's jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead when Harsnishfeger and Rachel Zinni led off with singles before Tholen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Siegfried poked an RBI single to right field and Cardone lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Taylor drilled an RBI double to right center before Brittany Hildebrand drove in the final run of the inning with a single.

In the second, King's scored once off a Wilkes throwing error and another on a RBI single from Harnischfeger to up the score to 6-0. The Lady Monarchs ended the game in the fifth when Siegfried was hit by a pitch with two out. On the next play, a Cardone bunt resulted in a Wilkes throwing error, allowing Siegfried to score all the way from first base. On the next at-bat, another Wilkes throwing error brought Cardone home from second as the contest was halted due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Harnischfeger led King's seven hit attack with two base hits, while Zinni, Siegfried, Taylor, Beane, and Brittany Hildebrand added one hit each. King's freshman hurler Brittany Haight was solid in the circle, tossing a one-hitter in the contest.  Jordan Borger was the only Wilkes player to reach base with a fourth inning double.

King's returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs host Keystone in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at the Betzler Complex.
