KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS AT DELAWARE VALLEY
DOYLESTOWN, PA -- Visiting King's College posted a six-inning 8-0 win in game one then fell 3-1 in game two to earn a split at Delaware Valley College Saturday afternoon. The win earned the Lady Monarchs the third seed for next weekend's Freedom Conference Championship Tournament which will be hosled Friday and Saturday at King's.
King's sees its overall mark move to 13-11 and stand 8-6 in league games. Delaware Valley stands 11-21 overall and 5-9 in Freedom play.
The opener was dominated by King's freshman pitcher Brittany Haight as she hurled a four-hit shutout. Haight did not allow a hit through the first four innings, finishing the game with eight strikeouts while improving to 8-4 on the year.
King's managed seven hits in the game, but were aided by four Aggie errors, five walks, four wild pitches and a passed ball. In the first inning, Jenn Harnischfeger led off with a triple and scored on an error. Later in the stanza, the Lady Monarchs picked up two more runs as Delaware Valley committed two miscues on the same play.
King's added the lead with three runs in the third inning. It then notched a run in the fourth and sixth innings and the game was called after six due to the eight-run mercy rule. Harnischfeger and Brittny Baynes had two hits and two runs scored apiece in the victory.
In game two, King's took a quick 1-0 lead after their first at-bats. Erin Beane singled to center to start the frame. Beane would steal second and advance to third on a throwing error. After an Amanda Cardone flyout, Beane crossed the plate on a wild pitch for King's lone run.
Delaware Valley tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to a solo home run from Erin Fox. The Aggies then used two hits and two King's fielding miscues to score two more runs in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-1 lead they would never relenquish.
King's mustered six hits in the game scoring their lone run in the first. Harnischfeger, Beane, Cardone, Baynes, Kayla Rutkoski, and Kaitlin Siegfried each posted a hit. Annie Erndl pitched all six innings allowing three hits and three runs (one earned).
The Lady Monarchs will face second-seeded FDU-Florham Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Tournament. Top-seeded DeSales will play fourth-seeded Manhattanville in the 11:00 a.m. tournament opener.
