KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS FREEDOM CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER WITH FDU
 
MADISON, NJ -- The King's College softball team dropped the opening game of a Freedom Conference doubleheader to host FDU-Florham 6-5 but came back to capture the nightcap 9-1 in five innings as the Lady Monarchs managed a split Wednesday in Madison, NJ.

With the split, King's stands at 8-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. FDU, meanwhile is now 6-10 and 3-1 in league contests.

After falling in the opener, King's exploded for seven runs in the first inning of game-two. Jenn Harnischfeger singled and stole second while Rachel Zinni was hit by a pitch. After Harnischfeger scored from third on a failed pick-off attempt, Gretchen Tholen reached base on a FDU error as Zinni scored on the play. Kaitlin Siegfried walked and Amanda Cardone followed with a RBI double. Brittany Baynes then delivered a three-run home run. 

The Lady Monarchs added two more runs in the fourth inning when Siegfried drilled a leadoff home run. Cardone reached base on an error and later scored from third on another FDU error.

Offensively, Harnischfeger led King's with two hits while six other Lady Monarchs added one hit each. Baynes three-run home run in the first inning was her third round-tripper of the season.

Brittany Haight was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits and allowing just one run with six strikeouts.
In game one, FDU built a 6-2 lead after five innings and held off a King's rally. The Lady Monarchs scored three runs in the sixth inning when Annie Erndl walked Kayla Rutkoski singled, and Erin Beane reached base on an error. Harnischfeger singled and then Baynes followed with a base hit as Harnischfeger scored to cut the lead to 6-5. In King's final at-bats, Rebecca Taylor reached base on a one-out single, but the game would then end on an infield out.

Harnischfeger, Baynes, Taylor, and Tholen led King's with two hits apiece. Erndl was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits.

King's returns to action Thiursday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Lycoming College.
