King's College Men's Basketball Drops Eastern
Wilkes-Barre, PA--
Kyle Stackhouse turned in a double double as the King's College men's basketball team upended visiting Eastern 74-66 Saturday afternoon at Scandlon Gymnasium.
With 2:14 to play the Monarchs (8-7, 3-1 Freedom) held a 63-54 lead after a pair of foul shots by
Kyle Hammonds. Eastern (9-4, 2-2) came back with a layup by Donald Kaiser and a 3-pointer from Alex Nelson to cut the lead down to 63-59. Stackhouse converted an old-school three-point play with just 1:24 on the clock to push King's back out to .
The teams played a very tight first half with neither team leading by more than three points until the Eagles grabbed an 18-13 lead with 4:17 remaining in the half on a Nelson layup. The Monarchs closed the half out on 16-1 run keyed by treys from
Keyton Winder and
Matt Fiorino to give King's a 29-19 halftime lead.
Eastern came out of the locker room hot and went on 10-4 spurt to cut the King's lead down to 33-29 with 16:58 on the clock. The Monarchs responded with a 12-6 run of their own to go back up by 10, 45-35. The Eagles battled back to within four, 55-51, with 4:37 to play, but didn't couldn't get any closer.
The King's defense held the Eastern offense 10 points below their season average and didn't allow a 3-point basket until the 1:57 mark in the second half.
Wind
er led the Monarchs in scoring with 20 points, 14 coming inthe first half, to go with three rebounds and three steals. Stackhouse turned in 15 points and 12 boards for his first double double of the season. Hammonds was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe on his way to 12 points and six rebounds.
Tim O'Shea added 12 points and four rebounds.
Nelson paced the Eastern offense with a double double of 24 points and 10 rebounds as well as three steals. Kaiser chipped in 13 points and four boards. Dan Werth gave the Eagles eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Monarchs don't get a break as they welcome cross-town rival and final Freedom Conference unbeaten Wilkes to Scandlon Gymnasium Wednesday night for an 8:00 p.m. tip.
