King's Men's Cagers Fall to Rival Wilkes, 66-56

Wilkes-Barre, PA-- Wilkes' Matt Mullins connected on nine three-pointers to help the visiting Colonels top the King's College men's basketball team 66-55 at Scandlon Gymnasium Wednesday night in Freedom Conference action.

Wilkes opened the game hot hitting five 3-pointers in the first eight minutes to jump out to a 19-7 lead at 11:58 to play in the first half. The Monarchs would bounce back with the next seven points to cut the lead back to 19-16 with 7:38 on the clock.

With just 0:22 remaining in the first half the Colonels led 32-23, but Keyton Winder netted a layup to cut the halftime lead to 32-25 going into the locker room. King's carried that momentum into the second half and came out of the break on a 12-3 run to take their first lead of the game 37-35 on a Kyle Hammonds layup with 12:02 on the clock in the second half.

The teams were even at 44-44 after Matt Fiorino hit a trey with 9:02 remaining in the game. But Wilkes answered with an 18-7 run to build the lead back up to 62-51 at the 3:48 and made 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Hammonds led the Monarchs with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting and pulled down four rebounds. Winder was 3-of-12 from the field, but a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to add 12 points and five boards. Mike Foster chipped in seven points and five rebounds, while Nick Reisig added seven points and a pair of assists.

Mullins tallied 30 points to go with eight rebounds. Tyler Brenznitsky also reached double figures with 11 points  including shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Paul Huch chipped in seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Wilkes outrebounded King's 46-29 and finished with 14 three-pointers in the game

The Colonels improve to 12-3 overall and remain unbeaten in the Freedom. The Monarchs fall to 8-8 on the year 3-2 in the Freedom and look to bounce back when they travel to Manhattanville on Saturday. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.
