Monarchs Open Cross County Challenge with 81-53 Victory Over Marywood, Will Face Scranton on Tuesday

KING'S DOWNS MARYWOOD 81-53 IN CROSS COUNTY CHALLENGE OPENER

SCRANTON -- The King's College men's basketball team opened a 13-point halftime lead, then outscored host Marywood University 44-29 in the second half as the Monarchs registered a 81-53 victory in the opening round of the first-annual Cross County Challenge Monday night in the Insalaco Arena.

With the win, King's improved to 6-5 on the year while Marywood slipped to 4-7.  The event will conclude Tuesday night when the Monarchs face the University of Scranton at 8:00 p.m. The Royals posted a 71-53 win over Wilkes in the other first-round pairing.

King's opened the game with a 7-0 run but Marywood responded with the game's next seven points to knot the score with 16:13 remaining in the opening stanza. King's used a 7-2 spurt ignited by a Matt Fiorino three-pointer, one-of-two foul shots from Keyton Winder, and a three-point basket by Nick Reisig to give the Monarchs a 14-9 lead with 13:51 left in the half.

The Monarchs continued to slowly stretch the lead and used a 8-5 surge to build a 22-13 advantage on a Winder jumper with 9:23 on the clock. Mike Foster scored five straight points and Reisig converted a lay-up to push the score to 29-15 at the 6:12 mark.

Marywood closed to 33-24 at 2:08 on a pair of foul shots by Pierra Bakinde, but King's concluded the half with Kyle Stackhouse making one-of-2 foul shots and Kyle Hammonds burying a three-pointer with 0:05 on the clock as the Monarchs took a 37-24 lead into the break.


In the second half, the Monarchs extended the lead to 16 points on two occasions, the second coming at 16:03 on a Tim O'Shea bucket as King's built a 48-32 lead.

Marywood, however, responded with a 14-6 surge to cut the score to 54-46 at 11:05 after buckets by Matt Tentle and Shane Kellaher. The Monarchs, however, caught fire with a pair of three-pointers by Foster, seven points from Winder, and a a monster dunk by O'Shea with 2:33 to play as King's outscored outscored the Pacers 27-7 over the final 7:59 to walk away with the victory.

King's finished with a balanced scoring effort as four player reached double-figures. Winder posted a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds while Hammonds added 13 points. Foster tallied 12 points while O'Shea contributed 11 points, nine boards, and four steals. Reisig posted seven points and four assists while Donovan Womack contributed four points and four assists while Fiorino chipped in with six points.


Brent Keyes led Marywood with 18 points and six rebounds while Kellaher added 11 points and eight boards. Jonathan Velazquez also chipped in with 11 points.
