Scranton, PA-- For the first time since the 2006-07 season the King's College men's basketball team squared off with long time rival University of Scranton. The Monarchs came up on the short end of a 62-47 decision on the second day of the PNC Cross-County Challenge at Marywood's Insalaco Arena.
The Royals (8-4) jumped out early, opening the game on a 16-4 run including a pair of 3-pointers by Ross Danzig. Scranton increased its lead to 30-12 with 7:59 to play in the first half after Tommy Morgan connected from beyond the arc.
Trailing 36-19 with 18:17 to play the Monarchs (6-6) battled back going on a 10-3 run of their own capped by a
Kyle Hammonds layup to cut the lead to 39-29. King's never got any closer as Scranton went on 17-7 to put the game out of reach at 56-36.
Hammonds led the Monarchs in scoring with 14 points as well as seven rebounds and a pair of assists.
Kyle Stackhouse chipped in seven points, seven boards and two helpers.
The Royals were paced by Tommy Morgan and Travis Farrell who each turned in a double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds each.
The Monarchs will have their last non-confernce tune up before returning to MAC play when they host Lycoming at Scandlon Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
