KING'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO ALBRIGHT 41-10 AT ALBRIGHT
READING – All-American wide receiver Scott Pillar caught five passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns and the host Albright College football team built a 28-0 half-time lead as the Lions posted a 41-10 victory over King's College in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday at Shirk Stadium in Reading.
With the win, Albright improved to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MAC while King's slipped to 1-6 and 1-5 in league competition.
Albright struck first on the second possession of the game after forcing a King's punt and taking over at the Monarch 38. Lion quarterback T.J. Luddy connected on a 17-yard pass to Eric Wade at the 32. Ty Hughes carried for six yards to the 26 before Luddy scrambled for nine to the 17. Scott Pillar was then stuffed for a five-yard loss on a Wildcat run back to the 22. But on the next play, Luddy found Pillar in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown. Dan Sobolewski made good on the conversion kick as Albright took a 7-0 lead with 11:17 left in the first quarter.
After forcing another Monarch punt, Albright took over at its own 27. On second down Luddy hit Pillar for 12 yards to the Lion 42. Hughes carried for eight yards to the 50 before Luddy found Dan McNair for 42 yards to the Monarch eight-yard line. Hughes followed with a three-yard run to the five but was stopped at the line of scrimmage on the next play to set up a third-and-goal play. On the next play, fifth-year senior fullback Marty Rhinehardt burst into the end zone off right tackle for the second Albright score of the game. Sobolewski added the point-after as Albright extended the lead to 14-0 with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Albright forced a third straight Monarch punt and took over at its own 23. Three plays netted 16 yards before back-up quarterback Dan Galczynski found Caleb Shilko for 17 yards to the Monarch 45. Two plays later, Shilko caught a short pass from Galczynski on the right flat, broke a tackle, and raced down the right sideline to the King's 11 on the final play of the first quarter. On the next play Rhinehart took a handoff on a draw play and burrowed into the Monarch end zone for his second rushing score of the game. Sobolewski added the conversion as Albright's lead grew to 21-0 with 14:52 left in the first half.
King's had its first scoring chance on its next possession when the Monarchs drove to the Albright 33 but the drive stalled and the Lions took over on downs at their own 36 after the Monarchs were foiled on a fourth-and-one play.
Albright went right to work as Luddy found Pillar for 38 yards to the King's 26. On the next play Luddy and Pillar hooked up for a 26-yard score. Sobolewsi made good on the extra-point kick as the lead swelled to 28-0 with 10:00 remaining in the half.
King's looked to answer when the Monarchs took over at their own 25. Hartranft hooked up with Kempa for 31 yards to the Albright. On the next play, the King's signal-caller ran a keeper for 15 yards to the Lion 27. Hartranft then found McGrath for six yards to the 23 before
Judens Goimbert added a three-yard run to set up a third-and-one play from the 18. On the next play, however, McGrath was stuffed for a two-yard loss to give King's a fourth and three play. From their Hartranft connected with Goimbert but the Monarch tailback was stopped inches short of the first down as the Lions assumed possession their own 13.
King's would force and Albright punt and took over at their own 42. After an offside penalty on Albright, Hartranft completed a four-yard pass to Kempa and a nine-yarder to
Josh Sanders at the Lion 42. After an incomplete pass, McGrath rushed for five yards to the 38. Hartranft than found
Adam Kudlacik for 12 yards to the 25, followed by a six-yard carry by kempa on a reverse to the Lion 19. On the next play, Hartranft had a pass deflected at the line for the third time in the game as the ball caromed into the hands of Albright's Tim McCaffrey to end the threat at the Lion seven with 0:52 left in the half.
The Lions outgained King's in the first half 259-to-141 in total yards, including 195 passing yards.
Albright began the second half with possession at its own 41 following a Monarch squib kick. The Lions used seven plays to reach the end zone when McNair hauled in a 35-yard scoring toss from Luddy to pad the lead. The extra-point failed but the Lions built a 34-0 advantage with 10:45.
Two possessions later Albright took over at its own 28-yard line. On first down Luddy found Pillar for 54 yards to the King's 18. Hughes then followed with a 13-yard run to the Monarch five, then added four more to the King's one. After Rhinehardt and Hughes were both stacked up for no gain, the Lions faced a fourth-and-goal from the one. From there, Luddy fumbled the snap from center and the Lions recovered at the one as the Monarch defense came through with a successful goal line stand.
The Monarchs offense, however, was unable to move the ball and on a third-down play, Hartranft attempted to avoided a sack in the end zone and collided with McGrath. The ball popped loose and Albright lineman Matt Pattison recovered the fumble in the end zone for a Lion score. Sobolewski made good on the extra-point as Albright built a 41-0 lead with 3:19 left in the third quarter.
King's started its first scoring drive of the day with a 54-yard pass from Hartranft to Kudlacik to the Albright 20. After a five-yard pass to McGrath, the Monarch tailback rushed for consecutive carries of five yards each to the Lion three. On second-and-goal, McGrath added two more yards to the one-yard line. On the next play Hartranft scored on a quarterback sneak to get the Monarchs on the board.
Kevin Mulvihill converted the extra-point kick as King's brought the score to 41-7 with 14:54 left in the contest.
King's defense came through with turnover on the next possession when
Anthony Martuccio picked off Galczynski, giving King's possession at the Albright 37. The Monarchs then used a 10-yard run by McGrath and an 18-yard screen pass from Hartranft to McGrath to move the ball to the Lion 19. Hartranft was sacked on the next play, moving the ball back to the 26 but McGrath followed with a six yard carry to set up a third-and-11 play from the Albright 21. After an incomplete pass, King's settled for a 39-yard field goal by Mulvihill to cut the lead to 41-10 with 9:34 remaining for the final score of the game.
Albright outgained King's 419-to-265 in total yards and held an 18-to-10 advantage in first downs. Luddy joined Pillar in leading the Lion offense, completing 9-of-10 passes for 241 yards and three scores. McNair added three catches for 84 yards and one touchdown.
For King's, McGrath rushed for 77 yards on 15 carries and added three receptions for 28 yards while Hartrant completed 12-of-22 passes for 153 yards and an interception. Kempa led the receivers with three catches for 41 yards. Defensively for King's,
Ryan Cordingly and
Ryan Kelly each posted a team-high seven tackles while Martuccio had six stops with an interception.
King's returns to action on Saturday when the Monarchs host Stevenson University at 1:00 p.m.
