King's College Men's Cagers Drop 67-56 Decision to Muhlenberg
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.—The King's College men's basketball team fell to visiting Muhlenberg 67-56 Monday night in the final non-conference tune up before league play tips off on Wednesday.
The Monarchs held a 37-27 edge going into halftime and were able to extend the lead in the first two minutes of the second half to 41-28 on buckets by
Tim O'Shea and
Tom Heston. The teams traded baskets for the next five minutes and a
Keyton Winder layup with 13:50 to play saw the Monarchs up 45-34.
Muhlenberg answered with a 17-3 spurt that was capped by an old-school 3-point play by Brandon Bovino to put the Mules up 51-48 with 7:58 to play. King's trimmed the lead to one, 54-53, on a
Kyle Hammonds 3-pointer, but couldn't regain the lead as the Mules scored the next nine points to put the game out of reach.
King's held a 17-16 edge midway through the first half, and were able to the build a lead with a 10-2 run keyed by five points from
Mike Foster and an old-fashioned three point play from Winder, putting the Monarchs up 27-18 with 6:48 remaining in the first half.
The Mules battled back to 27-23 with 5:25 to play in the first half, but King's rallied to close out the frame outscoring Muhlenberg 10-4 to take a 37-27 lead into the half.
Muhlenberg won the rebounding battle 50-37. The Mules also went 18-for-28 at the charity stripe while the Monarchs shot just 3-of-6 from the line.
Kyle Hammonds paced the Monarchs on offense scoring 11 points to go with three rebounds and two blocks. O'Shea chipped in 10 points and six boards. Winder posted nine points, six rebounds and four blocks.
Ian Oakley tied his career high with eight points and three helpers. Heston was King's leading rebounder with seven boards.
Malique Killing led all scorers with 21 points to go with four rebounds and four helpers. Kevin Hargrove finished with a double-double scoring 17 points and 15 rebounds.
The Monarchs open conference play on Wednesday when they host Delaware Valley College at 8:00 p.m. at Scandlon Gymnasium.
