King's Opens Conference Play with Win Over Delaware Valley Behind Career Night for Winder
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.—
Keyton Winder went off for 27 of his career-high 32 points in the first half to help the King's College men's basketball team to an 83-65 victory over Delaware Valley in the Monarchs Freedom Conference opener.
The Monarchs held a slim 21-19 lead with 8:20 left in the first half after the Aggies got a dunk from Jeremy Beckett. King's closed out the half on a 20-12 spurt, keyed by 15 points from Winder, to take a 41-31 lead into the break.
The Aggies were able to keep the lead at 10, 44-34 with 17:54 to play, but the Monarchs pushed the lead to 65-42 with a 21-8 run sparked by 11 points from
Kyle Hammonds. The lead never fell under 18 the rest of the way.
Delaware Valley jumped out early going up 5-0 on a pair of free-throws and a 3-pointer from Jay Donovan. King's fought back with a 17-5 run to take a 17-10 lead. The Aggies cut the lead to 21-19, but were unable to get any closer.
Winder's career-high 32 was the highest total for a King's player since Kevin Conroy tallied 33 against Wilkes on Feb. 19, 2011. Winder also grabbed six boards and had a pair of blocks. Hammonds chipped in 17 points and five boards.
Matt Fiorino scored 12 points to go with a career-high five rebounds and three helpers.
Tim O'Shea was the fourth King's player to reach double-figures with 10 points as well as a team-leading eight boards.
The Aggie offense was led by 18 points from Donovan. Beckett posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Zach Sly notched 13 points and four rebounds. Cam Lee scored 10.
With the win the Monarchs improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom Conference. Delaware Valley falls to 2-3 and 0-1 in league play.
The Monarchs continue their conference slate on Saturday when they travel to FDU-Florham for a 3:00 p.m. showdown with the Devils.
