MONARCHS FALL IN OVERTIME TO SUSQUEHANNA IN PNC CLASSIC
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College men's basketball team was unable to make a six-point half-time lead stand up as visiting Susquehanna rallied for a 69-63 win in overtime in the final game of the PNC/Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
Susquehanna improved to 3-6 while the Monarchs fell to 5-4.
King's led by as many as 11 points in the first half, including a 29-19 advantage with 3:56 in the opening stanza. The Crusaders scored the final four points of the half on a pair of foul shots from Brendan Rezny and a jumper by Spencer Ortmyer to cut the lead to 29-23 at the break.
In the second half Susquehanna continued to rally and eventually took a 37-36 lead with 11:17 after a pair of free throws by Mike Perillo. The Crusaders extended the lead to nine points twice, the last coming on a three-pointer from Brandon Hedley with 7:10 on the clock to give Susquehanna a 50-41 lead.
King's, however, would mount a rally of its own, using four straight points from
Ian Oakley, and a combined eight points from
Kyle Hammonds and
Tim O'Shea to tie the game at 57-57 with 1:20 to play. Both teams had scoring chances down the stretch but were unable to convert.
In overtime, King's took a 58-57 lead when Hammonds made one-of-two charity tosses but Susquehanna scored five straight points on a pair of foul shots from Wally Rutecki and a three-pointer by Perillo to build a 62-58 lead with 3:14 to go. After a King's bucket by
Tom Heston, cut the score to 62-60, Susquehanna scored seven of the next nine points to seal the victory.
Hammonds led King's with 12 points and five rebounds while O'Shea followed with 11 points and four boards.
Chris Hobson contributed 10 points and five rebounds while
Matt Fiorino chipped in with nine points and three assists. Oakley tallied six points and 10 rebounds to aid the Monarch cause. Hammonds and Fiorino were also named to the all-tournament team
For Susquehanna, Miller posted 16 points and seven rebounds while Luke Cable followed with 12 points. Perillo and Hadley chipped in with 10 points each. Miler was an all-tournament team selection.

SHOVLIN LEADS WILKES PAST CENTRAL PENN
WILKES-BARRE — Chris Shovlin scored 37 points and dished out seven assists to lead Wilkes University to a 93-88 victory over Central Penn College on the final day of the round-robin PNC/Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium o the campus of King's College.
With the win Wilkes improved to 4-4 while Central Penn slipped to 8-5.
Wilkes trailed by as many as 10 points in the first haf but rallied to take a 48-45 lead at the break. The Colonels maintained the lead throughout the final 20 minutes of play, leading by as many as eight points by never trailed for the remainder of the game.
Shovlin, wjo was named most valuable player of the event, hit on 11-of-19 from the field and 11-13 from the foul line. Tyler Breznitsky was also named to the all-tournament team after scoring 21 points in the gae. Bernard Edmunds added 10 points and six boards despite playing just 16 minutes due to foul trouble.
For Central Penn, Lamar Drayton scored 20 points while Devon Dorsey added 19 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Clagett tallied 17 points and four assists while Wes Kirkland contributed 13 points and five rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
