King's Softball Registers Freedom Conference Split with Eastern

KING'S RALLIES PAST EASTERN IN NIGHTCAP TO SALVAGE FREEDOM CONFERENCE SPLIT

ST. DAVIDS -- The King's College softball team overcame a 5-1 deficit with a sixth-run fourth inning as the Lady Monarchs posted a 7-5 win over host Eastern University in the nightcap of a Freedom Conference doubleheader in St. Davids. The Lady Monarchs managed to salvage a split after dropping the first game 6-5.

With the split, King's stands at 11-5 overall and 1-3 in Freedom Conference play while eastern is 10-7-1 and 2-2.

Trailing 5-1 in the fourth, Amanda Cardone led off with a single for King's before Brittny Baynes smacked a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-3. After Kaitlin Siegfried and Kayla Rutkoski both singled, Tina Seber drilled a three-run home run to put the Lady Monarchs on top 6-5. Rebecca Taylor then drew a walk and later scored from third-base on a sacrifice fly by Lisa Alley to oush the score to 7-5. King's relief pitcher Karissa Kross (2-0) would hold the Eagles to just one hit in the final four innings to pick up the victory.

Baynes was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Seber was 2-for-3 with one runs and three RBI. Rutkoski was also 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.


In the opener, King's fell behind 5-0 in the first inning thanks to five unearned runs following two errors. The Lady Monarchs cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Baynes and a RBI from Kaitlin Siegfried. King's added two more runs in the fifth when Jenn Harnishfeger singled and Cardone followed with a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Lady Monarchs tied the score in the seventh when Cardone drilled a two-out solo home run. But in the bottom of the seventh, Jen Gangemi drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on an error, then scored from third on a one-out infield grounder to end the game.


Cardone paced King's with a 2-for-3 showing with two home runs and three RBI. Baynes was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Britttany Haight was the losing pitcher for King's, allowing six unearned runs on six hits.

King's returns to action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Lycoming College in Williamsport.
