KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DELAWARE VALLEY IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team picked up a pair of important Freedom Conference victories Saturday as the Lady Monarchs swept a doubleheader from visiting Delaware Valley College in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the first game 13-4 in five innings while taking the nightcap 11-1, also in five innings/

With the wins, King's improved to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in Freedom Conference games. The Aggies, meanwhile, slipped to 6-9 and 0-6 in league competition

In the opener, Delaware Valley raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. King's, however, exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 11-4 lead. Rachel Zinni keyed the frame with a three-run double, Jenn Harnischfeger added a RBI double, and Kaitlin Siegfried registered a run-scoring single, while the Lady Monarchs capitalized on two errors, three walks, and two hit batters in the inning.

The Lady Monarchs added two more runs in the fourth when Zinni and Harnischfeger both walked and later scored on a double from Amanda Cardone.

Siegfried and Cardone paced King's with two hits each while Zinni was 1-for-1 with two walks, scored twice. and drove in four runs. Karissa Kross was the winning pitcher for King's in relief, allowing three hits with four strikeouts in three and one-third innings.

In the second game, the Aggies again took an early 1-0 lead after their opening at-bats. But King's countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame when Harsnischfeger and Erin Bean led off with singles and Brittany Baynes smacked a two-run double. Siegfried followed with a RBI double of her own as the Lady Monarchs took a 3-1 lead.

King's added three more runs in the second after Seber and Zinni singled while Harnischfeger reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Two batters later Cardone stroked a run-scoring single while Baynes drove in another with an infield out. King's added its final run of the inning on an Aggie error.

The Lady Monarchs then put the game away with a five-run third. Rebecca Taylor led off with a single before Seber drilled a two-run home run over the left-field fence. Cardone drew a bases-loaded walk, Baynes brought home another with a sacrifice fly, while Siegfried came through with a RBI single to push the score to 11-1.

Seber was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Zinni went 2-for-3 with two runs. Siegfried finished 2-for-3 with three RBI while Baynes was 1-for-2 with three RBI. Cardone went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Brittany Haight improved to 4-2 with the win, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.

King's will next host Baptist Bible College Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
