KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS WILKES IN IMPORTANT FREEDOM CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

WILKES-BARRE –  The King's College softball team pushed its winning streak to 13 games as the Lady Monarchs posted an important Freedom Conference doubleheader sweep over cross-town rival Wilkes University Saturday at the Ralston Complex.

The Lady Monarchs won the first game 11-0 in six innings before taking the nightcap 10-1, also in six innings.  With the sweep King's improved to 23-5 overall and 7-3 in Freedom Conference play while Wilkes slipped to 5-17 and 2-8.

The Lady Monarchs scored a run in the first when Erin Beane walked and later scored on a RBI form Kaitlin Siegfried. King's added two in the second when Tina Seber walked and later scored from third on a wild pitch. Jenn Harnischfeger also singled and scored on a double by Beane.

The Lady Monarchs built a 4-0 led in the third when Siegfried doubled and scored on a RBI single by Rebecca Taylor.  The lead swelled to 6-0 in the fourth when Rachel Zinni walked and later scored on an error while Harnischfeger singled and eventually touched home an infield grounder by Amanda Cardone.

King's invoked the eight-run rule in the sixth when the Lady Monarchs capitalized on two Wilkes errors and got RBI singles from Cardone, Siegfried, Seber, and Kayla Rutkoski.

Siegfried was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Cardone went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Harnischfeger was 2-for-4 with two runs while Rutkoski was also 2-for-4 with a RBI.  Annie Erndl was the winning pitcher, allowing just five hits in the game.

In the nightcap, King's built a 10-0 lead before Wilkes scored a run in the sixth but it wasn't enough after the game was again halted due to the eight-run rule.

The Lady Monarchs took a 1-0 first inning lead on leadoff walk to Harnischfeger and a RBI double by Cardone. King's added four more runs in the second on the strength of a three-run double from Beane and a run-scoring single from Cardone, upping the lead to 5-0.

King's added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run by Seber to push the score to 7-0. The Lady Monarchs put the game away in the sixth with three more runs, keyed by a two-run single from Taylor and a RBI base hit by Seber.

Brittany Haight was the winning pitcher for King's, tossing a four hitter while striking out three batters. Beane was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Taylor and Seber both went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Cardone chipped in with a 2-for-3 effort, including two RBI.
