KING'S SOFTBALL POSTED IMPORTANT SWEEP OF DESALES IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team picked up an important Freedom Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting DeSales University Thursday at the Betzler Athletic Complex.
King's won the first game 4-3 before taking the nightcap 5-3. With the sweep, the Lady Monarchs improved to 19-5 overall and 5-3 in Freedom Conference games. DeSales, meanwhile, slipped to 7-15 and 3-3 in league contests.
In the opener, DeSales scored a run in the game's first at-bats to open the early lead. King's answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a bases loaded walk to Kayla Rutkoski and a DeSales error.
After the Bulldogs scored two in the second to tie the score at 3-3, King's pushed across what proved to be the game-winner in the fourth. Tina Seber led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by Rachel Zinni, and scored on a base hit form Jenn Harnischfeger.
Seber and Erin Beane led King's with two hits each. Annie Erndle (4-3) was the winning pitcher, scattering eight hots in seven innings while allowing two earned runs.
In the nightcap, King's broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning, aided in part by two walks and a hit batter. The Lady Monarchs capitalized by getting RBI singles from Harnischfeger and Rutkoski, along with a bases-loaded walk to Brittny Baynes.
DeSales countered with three runs in the sixth but King's relief pitcher Karissa Kross retired the final six batters to pick up the save for starter Brittany Haight. Haight (5-2) pitched a solid game before tiring in the sixth, allowing five hits and two earned runs in five innings of work. Rutkoski was the lone-two-hit batter for King's.
King's will be idle for Easter until Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs travel to play Drew University at 3:00 p.m. in Madison, NJ.
