King's Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season at Drew

Madison, N.J. -- Despite a double-double from senior Joe Caffrey the King's College men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season, 84-73, to Drew in non-conference action Tuesday night at Baldwin Gym.

Drew held a 53-50 lead with 15:48 remaining in the game, but back-to-back layups from Tim O'Shea and Caffrey put King's up 54-53 at the 15:23 mark. The teams traded baskets before Jason Huelbig tallied five straight points to put the Rangers up 62-58 with 11:07 to play.

Trailing 65-60 with 10:37 to play, the Monarchs answered back with an Alex Cordoza layup and Mike Foster bucket to get back within one, 65-64. Drew pulled away with a 10-3 spurt capped by a Kevin-Michael Miller dunk to extend the lead back to 75-67.

King's was able to get the lead down to four, 75-71, but the Rangers used solid free-throw shooting down the stretch to close out the game.

The teams played a very even first half with Drew jumping out to an 11-6 lead, before King's answered back with four straight points to cut the lead to 11-10. The Ranger lead hovered between on and five before growing to 24-17 on a Steve Hydzik layup with 10:35 left in the first half.

Miller pushed the Drew lead to 35-29 at the 5:36 mark before the Monarchs used a 14-7 run capped by an old-school 3-point play from Caffrey to give King's its first lead of the night 43-42 with 1:08 to play in the half. Drew notched the final eight points of the half to take a 50-43 lead at the break.

Caffrey lead the way for the Monarchs with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Hammonds and O'Shea each tallied nine points. Pat O'Donnell notched eight points.

Mike Klinger led four rangers in double figures with 26 points including going 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Miller added 18 points and 11 boards while Huelbig added 15 points.

King's went cold from the outside going 1-of-13 from beyond the arc including an 0-for-11 mark in the second half. The Rangers went 9-of-19 from long range.

The Monarchs are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Delaware Valley for their Freedom Conference opener at 8:00 p.m. in Doylestown.
