MONARCH MEN DROP FREEDOM OPENER TO DEL-VALLEY, HAMMONDS SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT FOR MONARCHS

DOYLESTOWN -- The King's  College men's basketball team fell behind 43-25 at the half and fell short in a second-half comeback attempt as the Monarchs dropped a 74-64 decision to host Delaware Valley College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams Wednesday in Doylestown.

In defeat King's senior guard Kyle Hammonds scored 19 points, including the 1,000th point of his collegiate career. Monarch coach J.P. Andrejko will have to wait one more game to attempt to secure the 200th coaching win as King's mentor.

With the loss, King's fell to 4-2 overall while the Aggies improved to 4-2. 

The teams were locked in a 9-9 tie five minutes into the game but the Monarchs were outscored 34-16 over the final 15 minutes of play.

Hammonds connected on his 1,000th career points with 14:42 left in the contest when he connected on the first of two made free throws. 

The Monarchs used a 9-2 spurt to cut the Aggie lead to 45-34 with 13:55 left. In the run, Hammonds connected on his 1,000th career points with 14:42 left in the contest when he was successful on the first of two made free throws. He needed eight points to reach the milestone entering the contest.

The Aggies, however, pushed he lead back to 16 points when a Nick Sullivan three-pointer gave the host school a 51-35. 

King's battled back and a Hammonds three-pointer cut the lead to 58-46 at 7:25.  A Tom Heston bucket cut the score to 61-50 with 5:50 left, but the Aggies countered with a dunk by Chris Moran to extend the score to 63-50 at the 5:28 mark.  Hammonds then used two foul shots to trim the score to 63-52 with 5:00 on the clock.

The Monarchs used a Heston lay-up and one-of-two free throws by Hammonds with 3:14 left to cut the lead to 65-55. After an Aggie turnover Hammonds canned two more foul shots to bring the Monarchs to within 65-57 and Heston followed with an inside bucket at the 2:07 mark to cut the lead to 65-59.

After an Aggie miss, King's Alex Cardoza was fouled with 1:35 left and made one-of-two charity tosses to trim the score to 65-60. But Delaware Valley came up big when Zach Sibel drilled a three-pointer with 1:04 remaining to push the score to 68-60.

With King's forced to foul the Aggies made four-of-four three throws down the stretch and the Monarchs would draw no closer than eight points as the Aggies held on for the victory.

Hammonds had 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting but was 8-of-11 at the foul line. Heston added 12 points and three rebounds. Joe Caffrey followed with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists while Tim O'Shea contributed seven points.

Zach Sibel led the Aggies with 20 points, including six three-pointers while Chris Moran added 12 points and nine boards and Jay Donovan chipped in with 10 points.

King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs host FDU-Florham in a 3:00 p.m. Freedom Conference matchup.
