King's Men's Basketball Finishes Season Sweep of Wilkes with 71-62 Win
Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – For the first time since the 2009-10 season the King's College men's basketball team swept the season series with crosstown rival Wilkes as the Monarchs posted a 71-62 victory Saturday afternoon in Scandlon Gymnasium in the finale for both teams.
With 7:00 minutes to play the Monarchs held a nine point edge, 60-51, after an old-school 3-point play by
Keyton Winder. Wilkes battled back with layups by Chris Shovlin and Brendan Sheldon sandwiching a free throw by Nic Wilkins to cut the lead to 60-56. King's scored the next four points to push the lead back to 64-56 with just 2:38 to play. After a 3-point play from Wilkins and a trey from Steve Stravinski the Monarch lead was slashed to 64-62. King's pulled away with an old-fashioned 3-point play from
Tim O'Shea and a 4-of-4 effort from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds.
The Colonels jumped out early scoring the first eight points out of the gate and opening up an 11-1 lead just four minutes into the game. King's rallied with an 8-2 spurt keyed by a pair of
Kyle Hammonds jumpers at the elbow to cut the lead to 13-9 at the 12:38 mark in the first half.
Wilkins extended the Wilkes lead to 18-11 at 9:34 with a layup, but King's a
Mike Foster hit bookend 3-pointers as part of a 10-3 run that saw the score tied at 21 with 6:20 to play in the half. The Monarchs outscored Wilkes 10-4 over the final six minutes of the half taking a 31-25 lead into the locker room.
The Monarchs momentum carried into the early part of the second half as King's opened the period on a 10-5 run to push the lead out to 41-30 at the 16:41 mark.
Foster gave King's its largest lead of the game with 9:31 to play, connecting on his third triple of the game making the score 57-46. The Colonels tallied the next six points to cut the lead to 57-51 with 7:23 on the clock.
Hammonds led the way for the Monarchs with 14 points to go with six rebounds and two steals. Foster added 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Tom Heston added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Ian Oakley grabbed 10 boards while scoring four points and dishing out three assists. King's senior guard
Matt Fiorino finished his last game with five points and concludes his career with 202 three-pointers, the second most in Monarch history. He will graduate with 858 points in his foyr years withthe Monarchs.
The Colonels were led by 14 points from Alec Wizar with 12 coming from 3-point range. Wilkes also got 13 points from Wilkins and Tyler Breznitsky. The Monarchs did a solid job on Wilkes leading scorer Shovlin who finished with just two points.
