King's Softball Splits Twinbill with Muhlenberg
Allentown, Pa. -- The King's College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Muhlenberg. In the opener King's fell 9-6 while in game two the Lady Monarchs earned a 5-2 victory.
In game one the Mules jumped on King's early in game one scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. After getting the first two batters of the inning King's starter
Annie Erndl put runners on first and second on a single and a walk. Taylor Triofiolis plated Kelly Kline. Erndl walked the next two Muhlenberg batters to bring around the second run.
Muhlenberg tallied five more runs in the second, three earned, on four hits and an error. The Monarchs battled back with six runs in the top of the third all with two outs.
Amanda Cardone belted a double scoring
Katie Kowalski and
Jenn Harnischfeger who each had singled. King's loaded the bases when
Tina Seber was hit by a pitch and
Maggie Gola walked. Kalya Rutkoski drew an RBI walk and
Amy Kowalczyk drove home a run with a single. Nicollette Pizzo drove home two with a single through the middle to cut the lead to 7-6.
Muhlenberg took advantage of another King's error in the fourth to put up a pair of unearned runs and set the final.
Harnischfeger was the only King's player to record multiple hits going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cardone added two RBI and one run scored.
Erndl took the loss allowing all nine runs, five earned, on seven walks and striking out two.
The night cap saw the Lady Monarchs put up a three spot in the top of the first. Harnischfeger led off with an infield single and moved to third on single by
Erin Beane. Cardone drove home both Harnischfeger and Beane with a single to right. Cardone came around to score on a
Maggie Gola single down the left field line to give King's the early 3-0 lead.
King's picked up single runs in the fourth and fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. The Mules picked up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth aided by a pair of Monarch errors, but King's starter
Brittany Haight worked out of the jam to set the final at 5-2.
In the second game Kowalczyk finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Harnischfeger also collected two hits while scoring a run and driving in a run. Seber, Rutkoski and Kowalski each tallied a pair of hits.
Brittany Haight pitched a complete game for the Lady Monarchs allowing two unearned runs no walks and no strikeouts.
King's improved to 6-2 on the season with the split. The Lady Monarchs are back in action on Saturday when they open Freedom Conference play against crosstown rival Wilkes on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
