KING'S SOFTBALL OPENS FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAY WITH SWEEP OF DEL-VALLEY

DOYLESTOWN -- The King's College softball team opened its 2013 Freedom Conference schedule on a positive note as the Lady Monarchs went on the road to post a doubleheader sweep of host Delaware Valley College.

King's won the first game 18-0 in five innings, then followed up with a 13-4 decision, also in five innings. With the sweep, King's improved to 10-2 on the year while the Aggies fell to 5-5.


In the opener, King's exploded for 10 runs in the first inning, then put the game away with eight more in the third.

Amanda Cardone went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, including a two-run home run in the third while Jenn Harnischfeger was 2-for-3 with three runs and a RBI. Erin Beane was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBI while Amy Kowalczyk finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI. Katie Kowalski also had a big game by going 2-for-3 with two runs, and a three-run home run in the third.

Kayla Rutkoski was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Maggie Gola and Nicolette Pizzo chipped in with one hit each. Karissa Kross (3-0) was the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit in five innings while striking out eight batters.

In the nightcap, King's fell behind 4-1 after one inning but used four runs in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to end the game.

Cardone was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, including a double and a solo home run in the third inning. Harnischfeger was 2-for-2 with three runs and a three-run home run in the second inning. Kowalski finished 1-for-3, including a three-run home run in the third while Tina Seber was 2-for-4 with three BI, including a solo home run in the fourth. Gola chipped in with a RBI single in the fifth.

Brittany Haight (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Annie Erndl. Haight pitched the final four and one-third innings without allowing a hit and struck out seven batters.

The Lady Monarchs will play Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Keystone College
