King's Softball Sweeps Keystone; Gigliello Earns 500th Career Win
La Plume, Pa. -- King's head coach Lisa Gigliello notched her 500th career win after the Lady Monarchs swept a non-conference doubleheader at Keystone Tuesday afternoon.
Gigliello now has a career record of 500-234-2. She has led the Lady Monarchs to 10 of the last 12 Freedom Conference titles.
"This win is all about the program we have built at King's," Gigliello stated. "This is about every player that has ever come through the program. I can't thank them enough."
The Lady Monarchs invoked the mercy rule in both games taking the opener 15-4 and then shutout the Giants 8-0 in the nightcap. Both games were halted after five innings of play.
King's jumped out early posting three runs in the top of the first.
Jenn Harnischfeger led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on an
Amanda Cardone home run.
Tina Seber kept the inning going with a triple down the right field line.
Kayla Rutkoski plated Seber with an infield single.
The Lady Monarchs pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second when
Erin Beane drove home
Nicolette Pizzo with a double off the center field fence. Keystone answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when Stephanie Puckett picked up a two RBI double cutting the lead to 4-2.
Maggie Gola hit a solo home run as part of a two-run third inning that gave King's a 6-2 lead. Keystone then trimmed the score to 6-4 with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
The big blow for the Lady Monarchs came in the fourth when King's turned three hits and two Keystone errors into six runs, keyed by
Katie Kowalski's first career home run. The Lady Monarchs tacked on three more runs in the fifth to set the final.
Amy Kowalczyk had three hits in game-one and scored three runs. Beane and Pizzo each picked up a pair of hits.
Karissa Kross (4-0) picked up the win in the circle going 2.2 innings allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out two. Karissa Worobey was hooked with the loss allowing 12 hits and eight walks, striking out four.
In the second game King's built a 2-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a RBI double from Cardone and a sacrifice fly by Gola. The big inning came in the top of the fourth. Kowalczyk drew a walk to lead off and moved up on a single off the bat of
Shelby Eby.
Lisa Alley then loaded the bases with an infield single. After a Kowalski fly out, Beane drove a single to left plating a pair of runs. Cardone drew a walk to load the bases again before
Tina Seber hit a sacrifice fly scoring Beane. Gola then came through with a three-run blast, her second home run of the day.
King's starter
Robyn Klingerman carried a no-hitter through 3.2 innings before back-to-back singles from the Giants. Klingerman (2-0) tallied the win going five innings, allowing no runs and just three hits while posting two strikeouts and no walks.
Beane paced the offense in the second game going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gola drove in four runs.
The Lady Monarchs are back in action on Thursday when they travel to defending Freedom Conference champion Misericordia for a doubleheader slated for 3:00 p.m.
