KING'S WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO WILKES IN BATTLE FOR FIRST-PLACE
WILKES-BARRE -- In a battle for sole possession of first-place in the Freedom Conference, the visiting Wilkes University women's tennis lived up to its title of defending champions as the Lady Colonels posted a 9-0 victory over host King's College Tuesday at Kirby Park.
With the win, the Lady Colonels improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in Freedom Conference play while King's slipped to 4-8 and 3-1 in league competition.
Wilkes opened the match by winning all three doubles contests to forge ahead 3-0. The Lady Colonels then captured each of the six singles bouts, winning five in straight sets. King's freshman Madeline Griffin gave a strong accounting of herself in the number-two singles flight, falling in three sets to Ally Kristofco. Griffin dropped the first set 6-0 before taking the second 7-6 in a 7-4 tiebreaker. The pair then played super tie-breaker in the third set with Kristofco posting a 10-7 triumph.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Lady Monarchs travel to Glenside to face Arcadia University at 12:00 noon.
