King's Softball Drops a Pair to Ithaca in Non-Conference Action

Ithaca, N.Y. -- The King's College softball team suffered a pair of losses at Ithaca College on Wednesday afternoon falling 6-5 in eight innings in the opener before dropping a 7-3 decision in the nightcap.

In the opener the Lady Monarchs jumped out early with three runs in the first. Jenn Harnischfeger led off with a walk and moved to second on an Amanda Cardone walk. Tina Seber plated Harnischfeger with a single to right and then came around to scored on a two-run two-out double by Kayla Rutkoski.

King's extended their lead in the third inning scoring two unearned runs with Nicolette Pizzo and Katie Kowalski picking up RBI singles.

The Bombers got back in the game with four runs in the fifth. After a lead-off single and a pair of walks loaded the bases Julianne Vincent hit a ball to the left center field gap. Erin Beane and Kowalski collided allowing all four runners to score on an inside the park home run cutting the King's lead to 5-4.

Ithaca tied the game in the seventh. Rachel Dell'Orto slapped a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Cari D'Alessandro single. The game winning run came in the eighth when Vincent reached on fielding error and scored on a double off the bat of Dell'Orto.

Maggie Gola had two hits in the opener and added a run scored. Brittany Haight suffered her first loss of the season in the circle allowing two runs one earned in two innings of relief.

Game two saw the Bombers on top early loading the bases in the top of the first inning. Sydney Folk belted a grand slam to right field to give Ithaca a 4-0 lead. The Lady Monarchs got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, but Ithaca answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame extending the lead to 6-1.

Gola led off the sixth with a solo home run to left field. King's added another run in the sixth after Rutkoski doubled and came around to score on a Shelby Eby single to right cutting the Ithaca lead to 7-3.

Harnischfeger, Gola and Lisa Alley all had two hits in the second game with Gola tallying an RBI and a run scored. Rachel Linso took the loss for King's in the circle striking out three.

The Lady Monarchs are now 21-5 overall and continue Freedom Conference play on Saturday when they travel to FDU-Florham for a 1:00 p.m. start.
