King's Softball Rallies Twice to Sweep Wilkes and Improves to 18-2

KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS WILKES WITH PAIR OF RALLIES

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team remained unbeaten in Freedom Conference games as the Lady Monarchs rallied twice to sweep a doubleheader from cross-town rival Wilkes University Thursday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the first game 9-7 before taking the nightcap 7-5. With the sweep, King's improved to 18-2 overall and 6-0 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, fell to 7-13 and 0-4.

In the opener, King's trailed 7-2 but rallied for six runs in the fifth inning after Wilkes committed three errors to take a 8-7 lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth.

Erin Beane led King's with a 2-for-4 showing and two RBI, including a double. Jenn Harnischfeger was 1-for-3 and scored two runs while Amy Kowalczyk and Nicolette Pizzo both had two-run singles. Rachel Linso (3-0) was the winning pitcher in relief for King's, allowing three hits over the final two and two-thirds innings.

For Wilkes, Jess Paveltez was 4-for-4 with two RBI while Michelle Coyle finished 2-for-4 with three runs. Vickie Warne added to hits. Laykin Hughes took the loss, allowing nine runs, four which were earned, on eight hits while striking out eight batters.

In the second game King's took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Tina Seber in the first inning.

Later in the game with King's holding a 3-1 lead, Wilkes scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead on the strength of a a pair of two-run home runs by Alex Hoops and Alysha Bixer.

But King's rallied again, this time in the sixth inning with a four-run outburst. Kayla Rutoski led off the frame with a single and Kowalczyk drew a walk. Pizzo then got on with a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Rutkoski then scored on an infield RBI from Katie Kowalski before Kowalczyk touched home on a wild pitch. Beane and Seber then delivered run-scoring singles to push the score to 7-5.

Seber led King's by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Beane was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Harnischfeger, Kowalczyk, and Pizzo added two hits apiece. Brittany Haight (5-0) was the winning pitcher in relief, tossing the final two and one-third innings without allowing a base-runner.

For Wilkes, Paveletz, was 2-for-4 while Bixler finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hoops was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Emily McGrath contributed two hits. Brooke Chapin took the loss, allowing seven earned runs and 12 hits with one strikeout in five and two-thirds innings.

King's returns to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Eastern University
