KING'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO ALBRIGHT 30-24 IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME
READING -- Chris Dawson scored the game-winning touchdown on a 26-yard run in the second overtime period as the host Albright College football team posted a 30-24 victory over visiting King's College Saturday at Shirk Stadium in Reading.
With the win Albright improved to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the MAC while King's slipped to 3-4 and 3-3 in conference play.Albright received the first possession over overtime from the Monarch 25.  Quarterbacn Pat Wise hit Vinny Williams for 13 yards to the King's 12. Dawson them carried for seven yards to the five. On the next play Dawson burst into the end zone off left tackle to give the Lions the lead. Dan Sobolewski added the conversion as Albright took a 24-17 lead.With King's needing a touchdown to extend the game.On first down Kyle McGrath rushed for 13 yards to the Lion 12. After McGrath pickd up three yards, Hartranft found Kempa for 10 yards to the three-yard line. On the next play McGrath was stuffed for a two-yard loss to set up a second-and-goal play from the Lion five. An incomplete pass in the back of the end zone to Tyler Marroni was followed by an incomplete pass. On fourth down and the game on the line, Hartranft hit Kempa on a fade pass into the left corner of the end zone to bring the Monarchs within a point. Kniaziewicz converted the extra-point to tie the game at 24-24.King's was awarded the next possession and McGrath ran for one yard to the Lion 24. Hartranft would then find Danny Lynch for 11 yards to the 13. After a run for no gain by Hehre, Hartranft hit Kempa for six yards to the Lion seven. On third-and-four, McGrath was stopped at the five to give King's a fourth-and-two play. Rather than attempt a field goal King's would attempt to go for the first down. Hartranft ran a keeper off left tackle and was stoppde a yard short, leaving Albright with needing just a field goal to win.After a short run on first down, Albright scored the game winner when Dawson took a pitchout and ran untouched 23 yards into the end zone for the deciding touchdown.King's defense would produce the first points of the game when an Eric Haenggi punt pinned Albright back at its own four-yard line. On the first play of the drive Albright ran a sweep but Monarch linebacker Bobby Russel tackled Dawson in the end zone for a safety as King's took a 2-0 lead with 11:24 left in the half.Later in the quarter Albright put together a 89-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard pass from Wise to Dan Grillo. Dan Sobelewski made good on the point after as Albright took a 7-2 advantage with 2:09 left in the half, a scored which stood up at the break. On the first possession of the second half King's head coach Jeff Knarr looked to change the tempo of the game and brought in wildcat quarterback Tom Hehre to give the Lion defense a new look.  The Monarchs marched to the Albright 13 but missed out on a golden opportunity when Hehre threw an interception at the Albright eight-yard line to end the threat.But the Monarch defense came through with another big play when linebacker Monroe Sherman sacked Wise at the Lion four-yard line and Anthony Martuccio recovered in the end zone for a Monarch touchdown. King's went for the two-point conversion and Hartranft found tight end Danny Lynch in the end zone to put the Monarchs ahead 10-7 with 11:26 remaining in the third quarter.After the teams traded punt, Albright took over at its own 41 and moved to the Monarch 35. here the drive stalled and Sobolewski drilled a school-record 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10 with 2:32 left in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Lions would take over at their own 22 following a King's punt and proceeded to march 78 yards, aided by two Monarch pass interference penalties. Albright eventually score the go-ahead touchdown when Wise found Gerrod Gainer with a 15-yard scoring strike with 8:56 left in the game. Sobolewski made the conversion as Albright forged ahead 17-10.King's countered when it took over following an Albright punt at its own 21. The Monarchs used a 13-yard scramble by Hartranft and a six-yard run from Patrick Robinson to move into Albright territory. Two plays later Hartranft found Dan Kempa for a 53-yard touchdown pass to bring King's within a point. Kniaziewicz made good on the extra-point kick to tie the game at 17-17 with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter.Albright had a chance to win the game in regulation as it used a 50-yard pass from Wise to Williams. The Lions would eventually reach the King's 13-yard line when the Monarchs caught a break.  On the next play Wise attempted a lateral swing pass that fell incomplete and was ruled a fumble on the play. Russell recovered for King's at the Monarch 15 to end the threat with 2:45 left in the game.The Monarchs attempted a game-winning drve of their own, reaching the Albright 39. But with just 0:05 left, Hartranft lofted a Hail Mary pass into the end zone which was knocked down by Lion defender Joe Magosin to send the game into overtime. King's outgained Albright 443-to-322 in total yards. King's rushed for 255 yards while Albright managed 151 on the ground. The Monarchs also threw for 188 yards compared to 171 for the Lions. King's had possession for 50:06 of the game while Albright held onto the ball for just 24:54. The Monarchs, however, were just 3-of-14 on third down plays while the Lions were 3-of-8.McGrath led King's with a season-high 129 rushing yards on 23 carries. Hartranft completed 20-of-30 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns and did not throw an interception. Kempa caught 11 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Marroni caught two passes for 28 yards. Robinson chopped in with eight carries for 48 yards.For Albright, Wise completed 14-of-22 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Williams caught six passes for 114 yards  while Danny Tighe rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries. Dawson added 53 yards on eight attempts with two scores to pace the Lion attack.King's will return home on Saturday when the Monarchs host MAC co-leader Delaware Valley in a 1:00 p.m. matchup at McCarthy Stadium.
