WILKES-BARRE -- Madeline Griffin (Coatesville/Coatesville) became the first King's College women's tennis player to win the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament in singles since 1994 as the junior standout captured the number-one flight title Sunday at Kirby Park.

The third-seeded Griffin won her first two matches Saturday to reach Sunday's semi-final round. There, she downed second-seeded Amelia Capuano of Lebanon Valley 7-5, 6-1 to reach the finals.

Facing fourth-seeded Kendra Croker of Wilkes for the MAC crown, Griffin dropped the first set 2-6. After a back-and-fourth second set, Griffin and Croker were tied 6-6 and entered a tiebreaker. Griffin gutted out a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker to send the match to a deciding third set.

The duo would play a super-tiebreaker 10 points with the winner of the set needing to win by two points. With the score tied at 10-10, the players continued the set and Griffin eventually won the next two points to win 12-10.

Griffin becomes King's first MAC singles champion since Maria Adonizio won the title in 1994 as King's number-one player.

With four wins in the tournament Griffin, a first-team All-Freedom Conference selection last season, stands at 8-1 on the year.

King's will now be idle until the Lady Monarchs resume play in March durng Spring Break in Florida
