KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL REGISTERS 69-56 WIN OVER PENN STATE HAZLETON

WILKES-BARRE — Dan Rutecki scored a team-high 20 points, including 14 in the second half as the KIng's College men's basketball team posted a 69-56 victory over visiting Penn State Hazleton Monday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 2-0 on the year while Hazleton slipped to 2-2.

King's trailed 20-19 after the Lions' Matt Manbeck hit a short jumper with 6:26 left in the opening half. The Monarchs, however, would close out the half with a 11-3 run, keyed by two three-pointers fromJohn Fazzini and one by Nate Oliver as King's took a 30-23 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half King's began to slowly pull away, eventually building a 53-38 lead after an inside bucket from Derek Wilkins and a three-pointer by Oliver with 10:50 left in the contest. Hazleton managed to get the deficit to single digits when a three-pointer from Chris Woodring cut the score to 53-45 with 8:46 on the clock but the Monarchs responded with a 12-5 spurt to push the score to 65-50 after a a basket down low by Rutecki. Connor Hughes them followed with a pair of free throws to give the Monarchs their biggest lead of the game at 67-50 with 2:05 remaining.

Rutecki was 8-of-11 from the field and added six rebounds to pace King's. Oliver followed with 15 points of 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Wilkins and John Fazzini added eight points each while Chris Fazzini contributed seven points.

King's shot 47.2 (25-53) percent for the game and 53.8 (7-13) percent from three-point range.  The Monarchs made 12 turnovers while forcing the Lions in 18 miscues.

Jacob Solano scored a game-high 21 points for Hazleton while Jordan Singletary followed with 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

King's will be idle until Friday when the Monarchs compete at the Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament at Susquehanna University.
