KING'S MEN PLACE FIVE PLAYERS IN DOUBLE-FIGURES IN 74-59 VICTORY OVER DREWWILKES-BARRE — The King's College men's basketball team put forth its most balanced effort of the year as the Monarchs placed five players in double-figure scoring en route to a 74-59 victory over visiting Drew University Tuesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, the Monarchs will enter Thanksgiving break with a 4-1 record while Drew slipped to 3-2. The victory also enabled the Monarchs to avenge a 84-73 loss to Drew last season in New Jersey.
King's jumped out to a 15-7 lead with 14:36 remaining in the opening half thanks to four points each from
Tom Heston and
Chris Fazzini along with three more by
John Fazzini. After Drew used a 7-4 spurt to cut the lead to cut the lead to 19-14, the Monarchs countered with a 12-1 run to build a 31-16 advantage with 7:14 to go on the strength of a trio of three-pointers from
Nate Oliver and another long-range bomb by
John Fazzini.
The Monarchs, however, would get into foul trouble the rest of the half and Drew managed to whittle away with a14-7 run of its own to close to within 38-30 at the break.
King's came out of the locker room and immediately went to work, opening the final frame with a 7-0 spurt, keyed by four points from
Dan Rutecki, which gave the Monarchs a 45-30 lead with 17:01 remaining. King's would eventually build its biggest lead of the game at 16 points on two occasions, the last coming with 3:27 to play after a lay-p by Rutecki pushed the score to 68-52.
Chris Fazzini posted a team-high 17 points with six rebounds and two assists while Rutecki followed with 16 points and six boards Oliver added 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range, while
John Fazzini contributed 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Tom Heston registered 10 points and 10 boards while Dan Borner chipped in with five points, four rebounds, and three assists.
King's shot 50.9 (27-53) percent from the field and 46.2 (6-13) from three-point range.
Drew, meanwhile, was led by Jason Huelbig with 18 points and four rebounds while Mike Klinger followed with 12 points and three assists. Six-foot-eight center Kevin-Michael Miller had 10 points and four rebounds while 6-foot-7 Ozan Yucetepe finished with six points and nine rebounds.
The Monarchs will be idle until Wednesday when King's opens Freedom Conference play with an 8:00 p.m. home matchup against Freedom Conference pre-season favorite Delaware Valley College, which features 6-foot-9 transfer Manny Ochenje who began his career at Division I Pepperdine before moving on to Division II University of Indianapolis, where he suffered an early-season injury.
