King’s Men’s Basketball Drops Freedom Opener to Delaware Valley, 68-52

MONARCH MEN DROP FREEDOM OPENER TO DELAWARE VALLEY, 68-52

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- Delaware Valley College used an 18-2 run to begin the second half to defeat King's College 68-52 on Wednesday night at Scandlon Gymnasium in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.

With the loss King's falls to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Freedom. Delaware Valley improves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom.

The Aggies turned a 24-24 game at halftime into a 42-26 lead just five minutes into the second half behind six points from Manny Ochenje and five from Jay Donovan. The Monarchs chipped away at the lead and two John Fazzini foul shots cut the lead to nine points with 9:29 left on the clock. However the Monarchs were not able to get any closer than that.

King's opened the game strong in the first half scoring the first five points of the game. A Tom Heston foul shot with 4:07 left in the half gave King's its largest lead of the game at 24-13 but Delaware Valley closed the half on an 11-0 run to go into halftime with the game tied at 24.

Dan Rutecki led the Monarchs with 17 points and five rebounds. Rutecki shot 3-9 from the field and 11-12 from the free throw line. Chris Fazzini and Tom Heston both tallied eight points and five rebounds. John Fazzini posted seven points and a team high seven rebounds. Derek Wilkins shot 3-10 from the field for six points.

The Monarchs shot 30.2 (16-53) percent from the field, 12.5 (1-8) from three-point range, and 86.4 (19-22) percent on free throw attempts. The Monarchs were outrebounded 37-33 and scored nine points off 15 Delaware Valley turnovers.

Delaware Valley was led by Jay Donovan who had a game high 22 points off of a perfect 6-6 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line. Chris Moran tallied 13 points and seven rebounds while Francis Arnold scored 11 points. 6-foot-9 Manny Ochenje finished with six points and a game high nine rebounds.

The Aggies shot 46.0 (23-50) percent from the field, 61.5 (8-13) percent from three-point range, and 70.0 (14-20) percent on free throw attempts. The Aggies scored 18 points off 14 King's turnovers.

The Monarchs will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to Madison N.J. to face FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference matchup at 3:00 p.m.
