KING'S SOFTBALL SWEPT BY DEFENDING CHAMPION DESALES

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team dropped both ends of its Freedom Conference opening doubleheader to defending champion DeSales University Saturday. The Lady Monarchs fell by scores of 3-2 and 10-2 to fall to 8-4 on the year.

In the opener DeSales broke open a scoreless game in the third inning when Alexa Beaumont belted a three-run home run. King's attempted to rally in the sixth inning when Maggie ola reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a RBI double from Amy Kowalczyk. In the seventh, Lisa Alley doubled and touched home on a two-out double from Jenn Harnischfeger. King's, however, was unable to plate the tying run as DeSales held on to win the opener.

Cardone was 2-for-3 while Harnischfeger, Kowalczyk, Alley, and Nicolette Pizzo contributed one hit each.  Karissa Kross took the pitching loss, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out five batters in three innings of work.

In the second game, King's trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the first when Erin Bean singled and moved to second on a base hit from Cardone. She would later score from second-base on an infield ground-out to cut the score to 2-1.

But DeSales scored eight runs over the next three innings to build a 10-1 advantage after four innings.  King's would score the final run of the game in the fourth when Maggie Gola drille a home run over the centerfield fence to set the final score at 10-2.

King's mustered just five hits in the game as Harnischfeger, Beane, and Kowalczyk joined Cardone and Gola with base hits.

King's starting pitcher Rachel Linso took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in two innings.

The Lady Monarchs will return to the field on Wednesday when King's hosts traditional national power Ithaca at 3:00 p.m. in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
