KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH ITHACA

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team forged a doubleheader split with traditional national power Ithaca College Thursday at the Betzler Athletic  Complex. Ithaca won the opening game 12-9 before King's took the nightcap 4-3.

With the split, King's stands at 9-5 on the year while Ithaca is 9-3.

In the second game Ithaca score a run in its first at-bat but King's responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Jenn Harischfeger singled and Maggie Gola drew a two-out walk.  Both runners would later score following a pair of Ithaca errors.

After Ithaca scored in the third to tie the game at 2-2, King's again responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Eric Beane singled and Amanda Cardone reached base on an error. Amy Kowalczyk and Tina Seber both added hits. The Bombers added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to set the final score.

Rachel Linso was the winning pitcher for King's allowing three runs on six hits while striking out one batter. Beane was 3-for-4 to pace King's in the opener.

In the opener, Ithaca raced out to a 10-0 lead after three innings.  King's attempted to rally with a five-run fourth inning when Shelby Eby doubled and scored on a double by Lisa Alley. Maggie Gola would later drill a grand slam hone run over the centerfield fence. In the seventh, the Lady Monarchs added four more runs thanks to a RBI single from Eby and a two-run single by Beane. The Lady Monarchs would eventually bring the game-tying run to the plate but an infield out ended the game.

Gola led the Lady Monarchs by going 2-for-2 with four RBI. Eby was 2-for-3 with a double while Kowalczyk finished 2-for-4. Harnischfeger was 2-for-5 while Alley was 1-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

King's is slated to host Delaware Valley Saturday at the Betzler Complex.
