KING'S SOFTBALL POSTS FREEDOM CONFERENCE SWEEP OF DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE – Senior pitcher
Brittany Haight tossed a five-inning three-hitter in the opener, then added a three-inning save in the nightcap as the King's College softball team gained a doubleheader sweep over visiting Delaware Valley College Saturday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win, King's improved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in Freedom Conference games while Delaware Valley slipped to 2-12 and 1-5.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when
Jenn Harnischfeger walked and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by
Amy Kowalczyk.
The Lady Monarchs added two more in the third when Kowalczyk singled and scored on a triple by
Tina Seber. Seber would later score on a wild pitch to push the score to 3-0.
In the fourth, Harnischfeger doubled and scored on an RBI single by
Amanda Cardone to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-0 lead. King's ended the game with a four-run fifth when Seber,
Lisa Alley, and Harnishfeger all singled to load the bases.
Erin Beane then stroked a two-run single and Harnischfeger later scored on a wild pitch to end the game.|
Harnischfeger was 2-for-2 and drew two walks while scoring three runs. Beane was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Cardone was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Alley was 2-for-3 while Kowalczyk,
Nicolette Pizzo, and
Tina Seber chipped in with one hit apiece.
Haight was outstanding in the circle, allowing just three hits while striking out seven batters.
In the second game, King's built a 2-0 first-inning lead when Bean reached base on an error and Cardone singled.
Maggie Gola came through with a RBI single before Kowalczyk smacked a RBI double.
The Lady Monarchs stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third inning when Harnischfeger doubled and scored on a RBI single from Beane.
After Delaware Valley scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, Harnischfeger ripped a solo home run over the left field fence to push the King's lead to 4-1.
The Aggies added a second run in the fifth to cut the score to 4-2, but the Lady Monarchs countered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kowalczyk singled and
Nicolette Pizzo walked. After Seber walked to load the bases,
Kelsie Senchak walked to bring in a Kowalczyk. Pizzo then touched home following a wild pitch and Alley knocked in another run on an infield grounder to set the score at 7-2.
Haight entered the game in the fifth with King's leading 4-2 and worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam. Haight struck out two batters and inducing an infield out. She struck out four batters in three scoreless innings of work.
Karissa Kross improved to 3-3, allowing two runs in four innings while striking out five batters.
Harnischfeger was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and scored two runs. Kowalczyk was 2-for-2 with a RBI while Beane and Cardone were both 2-for-4. Gola, Senchak, and Alley each drove in a run.
King's wil travel to Manhatanvile College on Monday for a 3:00 p.m. Freedom Conference doubleheader
