King's Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Oneonta

Oneonta, N.Y. -- The King's College softball team battled to a pair of wins over SUNY Oneonta Thursday afternoon winning the opener 7-6 and rallying for a 7-5 victory in the night cap.

The scoring came early in the opener with the Monarchs posting four runs in the top of the first. Jenn Harnischfeger led off the contest with a hit by pitch and moved to second on an Erin Beane ground out. Amanda Cardone got King's on the board with an RBI single. Maggie Gola put runners on the corners with a single of her own before coming around to score on an Amy Kowalczyk double. Nicolette Pizzo plated Kowalczyk with a double of her own.

The Dragons answered back with a pair of runs taking advantage of two hits and a Monarch error to cut the lead to 4-2. King's posted two runs of its own in the third. Pizzo drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a Tina Seber single. Three illegal pitches later both runners came around to score making the King's lead 6-2.

Oneonta battled back in the bottom of the frame. The Dragons picked up three straight singles to load the bases before Katie O'Gorman tied the game 6-6 with a grand slam.

King's pushed across the game-winning run in the fourth. Beane opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a fly out by Cardone. After a Gola pop out, Kowalczyk came through with a clutch hit scoring Beane and setting the final.

Brittany Haight scored the complete game win for the Monarchs allowing six runs, four earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Anna Husain took the loss in the circle for the Dragons.

In the second game the Monarchs trailed 4-2 going into the seventh and rallied for five runs in the final frame to score the win.

In the seventh, Katie Senchak grounded out and Harnischfeger doubled and moved to third on a single by Beane. Cardone struck out looking before King's tallied four straight hits capped by a two-RBI single by Tina Seber to take a 7-4 lead.

Oneonta didn't go quietly with Nicole Marzillo hitting a solo home run, but Rachel Linso shut the door for the Monarchs to secure the sweep.

Linso picked up the win on the rubber going seven innings allowing five runs, four earned with two strikeouts. 

Pizzo collected five hits on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored. Kowalczyk tallied five RBIs in two games on three hits. Gola also collected three hits in the doubleheader.

The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Eastern for a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
