KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS MISERICORDIA

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team picked up a pair of key Freedom Conference victories Thursday as the Lady Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of Misericordia University in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

The Monarchs won the first game 2-1, then took the nightcap 5-1 to improve to 22-8 overall and 8-4 in Freedom Conference games. Misericordia, meanwhile, slipped to 15-13 and 6-6.

In the opener, Amanda Cardone tripled and scored on a base hit by Maggie Gola.  The Cougars tied the game in the sixth on a RBI single from Megan Hardy.

King's pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Erin Bean walked, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on a single from Gola.

Gola led King's by going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Cardone was also 2-for-3.  Brittany Haight (8-0) was the winning pitcher for King's, tossing a complete-game three-hitter.

For Misericordia, Hardy was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Melanie Quintanillas was 1-for-3 and scored the Cougars' lone run.

In the nightcap, King's struck in the first inning when Jenn Harnischfeger and Cardone both singled and Gola drilled a three-run home run over the left-centerfield fence.

After Misericordia scored a run in the third on a RBI single from Diana Kestenbaum, King's put the game away with two runs in the fifth. Harnischfeger singled and scored off a double by Cardone. Amy Kowalczyk then brought home Cardone with a RBI single to set the final score.

Karissa Kross (7-5) was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing seven hits and one run in four fulll innings. Haight picked up the save, tossing the final three innings of hitless relief.

Kestenbaum was 2-for-3 for the Cougars as the only multi-hit player for Misericordia.

King's will be idle until hosting Keystone College Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
