KING'S SOFTBALL POSTS SWEEP OF KEYSTONE IN NON-CONFERENCE TWIN BILL

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team prepped for Saturday's Freedom Conference regular-season finale by posting a doubleheader sweep of visiting Keystone College Thursday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the first game 8-0 in five innings before capturing the second game 6-2.  The Monarchs improved to 24-8 with the sweep while Keystone slipped to 11-19.

In the opener, King's scored five runs in the second inning on the strength of a two-run double from Erin Beane, a RBI sacrifice fly from Tina Seber

The Monarchs added two more runs in the fourth  when Amanda Cardone doubled and scored on a Maggie Gola single. Amy Kowalczyk singled and later scored on an error.  King's put an end to the game in the fifth when Lisa Alley walked, moved to second-base on a passed ball, and scored on a RBI single from Cardone.
Kowalczyk was 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI while Cardone and Shelby Eby both went 2-for-3. Beane was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.  Allison Herbert was the winning pitcher, tossing five shutout innings while striking out five batters and walking none.

In the nightcap, King's was forced to play without the services of three starters who missed the second game to to a mandatory academic commitment. The Monarchs fell behind early by a 1-0 count after Keystone scored in the top of the third inning. King's tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Jenn Harnischfeger tripled and scored on a single from Kelsie Senchak

After Keystone took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the Monarchs countered with a pair in the bottom of the frame.  Harnischfeger led off with a single and promptly stole second base. Senchak theh delivered a RBI single and later scored on a single up the middle by Kowalczyk to give King's a 3-2 advantage.

The Monarchs added three more runs in the sixth thanks in large part to five walks issued by Keystone pitching, a RBI single to center from Harnischfeger, and a run-scoring infield ground out off the bat of Senchak.

Harnischfeger was 4-for-4 with three runs and a RBI while Senchak finished 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Kowalczyk went 2-for-3 with a RBI.  Nicolette Pizzo added a base hot for the Monarchs while Caroline Drob and Eby each scored a run.

Rachel Linso was the winning pitcher in relief for King's, tossing the final two and two-thirds of the game, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters without yielding a run.  Monarch starter Robyn Klingerman pitched four and one-third innings and allowed two runs on seven hits before leaving the game with King's trailing 2-1.

King's returns to action Saturday when the Lady Monarchs host Freedom Conference rival FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m. in the Betzler Athletic Complex. King's needs to win one of two games to secure a berth in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament.
