KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS CENTENARY IN NON-CONFERENCE TWIN BIL
HACKETTSTOWN, NJ -- The King's College softball team pushed across 22 runs in two games to post a doubleheader sweep of host Centenary College Thursday in Hackettstown, NJ.
With the sweep, King's improved to 13-7 while Centenary slipped to 4-14.
In the opener King's built a 4-3 advantage in the top of the fourth after a two-run double by Amanda Cardone in the top, but in the bottom half of the inning, Centenary plated five runs to take a 8-4 lead.
In the fifth, King's used RBI singles from Lisa Alley and Jenn Harnischfeger to close to within 8-6. In the top of the sixth the Lady Monarchs rallied with a six-run frame.
Cardone led off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 8-7. Amy Kowalczyk singled and Nicolette Pizzo walked before Tina Seber drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Shelby Eby added a two-run single up the middle, Harnischfeger walked, and Erin Beane came through with a run-scoring single. Cardone then stroked a RBI single to left on her second at-bat of the inning to put the Lady Monarchs on top 12-8Karissa Kross, King's third pitcher of the game, allowed just one hit over the final two and two-thirds innings to shut the door on Centenary.Cardone was 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a home run and double. Harsnishfeger was 2-for-4 with three runs and a RBI while Eby finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Kowalczyk and Alley added two hits apieceIn the nightcap, Harnischfeger led off the game with a walk and promptly stole second. After a sacrifice bunt by Beane, Cardone delivered a RBI single and moved to third on the play after a throwing error. Maggie Gola followed with a RBI single but was out at second on a fielder's choice, allowing Kowalczyk to reach first-base. Pizzo singled before Seber delivered a run-scoring base hit to push the score to 3-0. After Alley reached on an error, Kelsie Senchak followed with a RBI single. Harnischfeger then stroke a two-run double to give the Lady Monarchs a 7-0 lead.King's added two runs more in the third inning on a pair of RBI singles from Senchak and Beane, then scored another run in the fourth inning when Gola drilled a solo home run to bring the final score to 10-0. The eight-run mercy run was invoked after the fifth inning.Harnischfeger was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Gola finished 2-doe-3 with a home run and two RBI. Pizzo was 2-for-2 with two runs while Senchak contributed by going 2-for-3 with two runs. Beane also added two hits and a RBI while Cardone was 1-for-2 with a RBI Robyn Klingerman was the wining pitcher, scattering seven hits over five innings without allowing a run. Klingerman struck out three batters without yielding a walk.King's returns to the field Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at cross-town rival Wilkes University.
