KING'S SOFTBALL POSTS DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team picked up a pair of important Freedom College victories on Saturday as the visiting Lady Monarchs posted a double-header sweep of cross town rival Wilkes Saturday at the Ralston Fields.


King's, which won by scores of 7-2 and 3-2, improved to 15-7 overall and 4-4 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 2-16 and 1-7.

In the opener the Lady Monarchs rode the arm of Karissa Kross who tossed a complete-game five-hitter and struck out five batters. Kross allowed a pair of runs in the first innings and then shut out the Lady Colonels the rest of the way.

King's took advantage of six Wilkes errors and scored four of its seven runs unearned. Maggie Gola was 2-for-4 and scored twice while Shelby Eby went 1-for-3, including a three-run double. Amy Kowalczyk was 1-for-2 with one runs and one RBI.

In the nightcap Wilkes again scored first with a second inning run but the Lady Monarchs tied the score in the third when Kelsie Senchak doubled and later scored from third when Jenn Harnischfeger was thrown out attempting to steal second base.

King's added its final two runs of the game in the fifth inning when Harnischfeger doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch. Erin Beane then walked and stole second before Amanda Cardone delivered a RBI single to push the score to 3-1.

Wilkes added a run in the sixth but King's starting pitcher Brittany Haight shut the door.

Cardone fiished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI while Senchak was 2-for-3 with a run. Harnischfeger was 1-for-3 with a run while Tina Seber smacked a double and Kowalczyk singled.

Haight tossed a four hitter, allowing two runs while striking out two batters.

King's returns to the field Tuesday with a five p.m. doubleheder against the at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex in Jessup, Pa. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
