King's Women's Tennis Advances to Freedom Tourney Final with 5-3 Win Over Misericordia

KING'S WOMEN'S TENNIS ADVANCES TO FREED TITLE MATCH WITH 5-3 WIN OVER MISERICORDIA

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's tennis team advanced to the Freedom Conference championship match as the second-Lady Monarchs posted a 5-3 semifinal victory over third-seeded Misericordia University Thursday at Kirby Park.

With the win, King's improved to 10-7 on the year and will now face defending champion and top-seeded Wilkes in the league title match Saturday at a time to be announced.  Misericordia, meanwhile, slipped to 10-9.

King's appeared to have the match iunder control after winning all three doubles contests to start the competion. The Lady Monarch team of Madeline Griffin and Sarah Lynn were 8-5 victors in the number-one flight while teammates Emily Biffen and Katly Rossowski won 8-4 in the number-two spot.  King's picked up a crucial win in the third flight when Lauren Dereinzi and Maggie Walsh gutted out a 9-8 (7-5) triumph to give the Lady Monarchs a 3-0 lead.

But Misericordia refused to quit and looked poised to make a serious run.  The Cougars picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win by Nellie Chmil at number-five singles while teammate Kiana Gough tallied a 6-1, 6-0 triumph to cut the gap to 3-2. King's responded with a 6-0, 6-3 victory by Griffin in the first flight to put King's ahead 4-2.

The deciding match came in the second flight when Breanne Phillips of Wilkes won the first set 6-0 over Lynn and led in the second set 1-2, but rallied for a 6-2 win. She then dominated the third set 6-2 to seal the team win.

In the number-three flight King's Biffen was leading 4-2 in a deciding third set but the match went unfinished after Lynn's victory clinched the victory for the Lady Monarchs.
