KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNS DESALES, 73-60WILKES-BARRE — The King's College men's basketball team exploded for a 42-23 half-time lead and placed four players in double-figures scoring as the Monarchs posted an important 73-60 Freedom Conference victory over visiting DeSales University Wednesday night in Scandlon Gym.
With the win King's improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Freedom Conference play while DeSales slipped to 9-5 and 1-5.
The Monarchs scorched the nets in the first half, shooting a season-best 61.5 (16-26) percent from the field and 66.7 (4-6) from three-point range.
The Monarchs came out of the games strong, using a
John Fazzini three-pointer to start the game, five straight points from
Dan Borner, inside buckets from
Dan Rutecki and
Dan Borner, and a driving lay-up from
Tim O'Shea to build a 13-7 lead. A lay-up from
Chris Fazzini and two foul shouts by Rutecki gave the Monarchs a 17-7 lead with 13:01 left in the opening half.
King's kept on the pressure and continued to make shots as a short jumper from
Tanner Reyan and back-to-back three-pointers from
John Fazzini and
Connor Hughes pushed the Monarch lead to 29-10 at the 6:43 mark of the first half. King's later took its biggest lead of the half when Borner's jumper gave the Monarchs a 25-points lead at 37-12 with 4:05 on the clock. DeSales outscored King's 11-5 the rest of the way to close to within 42-23 at the break.
In the second half the teams traded short spurts as the Monarchs maintained a 52-32 lead with 13:20 left. DeSales would begin to chip away and used a 17-7 run to cut the lead to 59-49 with 6:56 to play. King's extend the lead back to 65-50 thanks to a jumper by Rutecki and one-of-two free throws from
Chris Fazzini with 5:17 left. DeSales made one last push and came within nine points when a Brian Travis lay-up brought the score to 65-56 with 4:43 on the clock. But King's maintained its composure and a big three-pointer by
Chris Fazzini gave the Monarchs a 13-point lead at 68-56 with 3:46 to go and DeSales would closer than10 points the rest of the way.
King's balanced scoring attack was paced by Rutecki with 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists while
John Fazzini also added 13 points with four three-pointers, five rebounds, and two assists.
Dan Borner followed 11 points and three assists while
Chris Fazzini contributed 10 points and four rebounds.
Tom Heston chipped in with eight points and three boards while Tom O'Shea tallied six points and five rebounds.
DeSales was led by Cody Deal with 18 points while Aaron Burton followed with nine.
King's returns to the hardwood Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. conference game at Eastern University.
