KING'S RALLY FALLS SHORT AS MONARCHS FALL TO SCRANTON 86-83 IN OT

WILKES-BARRE --  The King's College men's basketball team rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to force overtime but the Monarchs were noble to complete the comeback as the 16th ranked University of Scranton walked away with s 86-83 victory Friday night on tyne first day of the Cross County Challenge.

The Monarchs trailed 57-40 with 11:14 remaining after Ross Danzig buried a three-pointer for Scranton. The Monarchs, though, battled back. KIng's used a an 11-3 run to trim the lead to 60-51 after a Dan Borner lay-up. After Scranton answered with a three-pointer by Justin Klingman, KIng's closed to within 63-55 with 7:-3 left on an inside bucket by Tom Heston.

With 3:-3 to play Scranton built a nine-point lead on two fou shots from Kevin Doolan to push the score to 72-63.  But the MOnarchs answewred with a three-pointer from Borner, a pair of foul shots from Chris Fazzini, and a pair of foul shots from Tom Heston to close to within 74-68 with 1:28 on the clock.   After a Scranton turnover, Heston was fouled down low and made two more charity tosses to bring King's to within 74-71 with 1:28 to go. Following a Scranton miss, Borner scored inside to trim the lead to 74-73 with 0:37 remaining. After Marcus Thomas converted two free three throws to push the Scranton lead to 76-73, Dan Rutecki buried a long three from beyond the top of the key to tit eh game at 76-76 with 0:-9 left. The Royals had one last chae to win but turned the ball over al the final whistle as the teams went to overtime.

In overtime King's took a 81-76 lead on five straight points but Tyler Burns. But Scranton countered with a 10-2 surge as the Monarchs scored just two points the rest of the way.

Scranton was paced by Brendan Boken with 24 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Doolan followed with 20 points while Justin Klingman and Ross Danzig chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively.

King's was led by Chris Fazzini with 23 points while Dan Rutecki added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tom Heston contributed 15 points and six boards while Dan Borner chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.

In the other first round game Marywood downed Wilkes 64-58.  Shane Kelleher had 18 points and nine rebounds while Jeremy Ringland followed with 10 points and seven rebounds. Michael Rotell also added 10 points with four boards. For Wilkes, Steve Stravinski had a team-high 17 points while Mason Gross added 10 markers.

King's will next face Marywood Saturday at 3:00 p.m. while Wilkes plays Scranton at 1:00 p.m. Both games can be followed online via LiveStats at:  http://www.sidearmstats.com/kings/mbball/
