KING'S MEN'S HOOPS USE BIG SECOND HALF TO DEFEAT MANHATTANVILLE 78-63WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College men's basketball team went on a 20-4 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to turn a three-point halftime deficit into a 13-point lead. The Monarchs scored 47 second half points en route to an important 78-63 victory over visiting Manhattanville College on Saturday night at Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win King's improves to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the Freedom Conference while Manhattanville falls to 5-12 overall and a 1-5 conference record.
Dan Rutecki scored 10 of his game-high 24 points during the run to begin the second half to give King's a 51-38 lead with 12:09 left in the game. The Valiants scored the next five points to bring the score to 51-43 before the Monarchs went on a 13-6 run to expand their lead to 64-49 with 7:29 left.
Tim O'Shea and
Connor Hughes combined for 10 of the points to give the Monarchs a 15-point advantage.
After an Anthony Maestre layup to start the scoring,
Chris Fazzini hit a three-pointer to give King's a 3-2 lead with 18:18 left in the first half. The Monarchs struggled for the next 11 minutes as the Valiants were able to go on a 20-10 run to take their largest lead of the game at 22-13 with 7:37 left in the first half. Layups by

Chris Fazzini, and Rutecki brought the Monarchs to within five points at 24-19 with five minutes left in the half. After trading baskets layups by Rutecki and
Chris Fazzini got the Monarchs to within one of the Valiants with 1:50 left in the first half. After a three-pointer from Wills Flynn of the Valiants and a free throw from
Tom Heston, Anthony Maestre hit a jumper to give the Valiants a five point lead at 34-29 with 57 seconds left in the first half. Hughes scored on a layup with 28 seconds left to give the Valiants a 34-31 halftime advantage.
Dan Rutecki led King's with a career-high 24 points and 17 rebounds.
Chris Fazzini scored 17 points to go along with five rebounds while
Tim O'Shea had a season-high 16 points off the bench.
Connor Hughes had a season-high 12 points and five rebounds.
Rich Douglas had six assists and two points in his first career start. The Monarchs shot 50.0 (26-52) percent from the field and 75.8 (25-33) percent from the foul line.
The Valiants were led by Anthony Maestre with 19 points and three rebounds. Juan Camacho scored 12 points while Wills Flynn had 10. Manhattanville shot 40.0 (24-60) percent from the field and 30.4 (7-23) percent from beyond the three-point line.
King's will next be in action on Wednesday when they travel a couple blocks down the road to face cross-town rival Wilkes University in another important Freedom Conference game at 8:00 p.m. in the Marts Center.
