KING'S FALLS TO MARYWOOD IN CROSS COUNTY CHALLENGE

WILKES-BARRE  -- The Marywood University men's basketball team broke open a 49-48 game with 8:16 left in the contest by closing out the game with a 19-5 run as the Pacers posted a 68-53 victory over King's College on the final day of the Cross County Challenge Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win King's slipped to 6-5 while Marywood improved to 7-3.

Marywood jumped out to a 24-9 lead after a James Curley three-pointer with 7:48 left in the first half, leading the Pacers to a 34-27 lead at the break. The Monarchs came out in the second half with a 37-369-3 surge and cut the lead to 37-36 with 15:42 to go following a lay-up from Chris Fazzini.  KIng's remained in striking distance but was unable to capture the lead.

With Marywood leading 49-46 with 9:09 left, KIng's used a driving lay-up from Dan Rutecki to cut the gap to 49-48 at the 8:16 mark.  But the Pacers ran off the net 12 points to build a 61-48 lead with 3:27 to play after a traditional three-point play from Shane Kelleher. After Rutecki broke the drought with an inside basket with 3:13 on the clock, Marywood put the game away with  a 7-0 surge to push the score to 68-50 with 1:47 remaining.

For KIng's, Dan Tutecki led the way with 19 pointa and eight rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Tom Heston followed with 13 pointsm five rebounds, and si assists. John Fazzini finished with eight points and two assists while Tyler Burns tallied six points. Chris Fazzini finished with four points and three assists while Dan Borner chipped in with three points and two boards.

Marywood was paced by all-tournament pick Alex Barr with 16 points and five assists while fellow all-tourney selection Shane Kelleher and James Curley contributed 12 and 11 points respectively.

Marywood shot 51.9 (27-52_ percent for the game while the Monarchs struggled with a 38.2 (21-55) shooting percentage.

In the other Saturday matchup, 16th ranked Scranton outlasted Wilkes 75-73. Scranton junior Brendan Boken scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of his career. Boken averaged 22.5 points per-game over the weekend to earl tournament most valuable player honors.  Justin Klingman added 15 points to earn a berth on the all-tournament team.  Marcus Thomas also had 15 points to round out the double-figure scorers.

For Wilkes. Zach Brunner netted 23 points while Steve Stravinski added 18 to earn a spot on the all-tourney team. Alec Wizar and Jeremy Hartman finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.

King's returns to the court Monday with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Muhlenberg College.
