KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH ONEONTA STATEWILKES-BARRE — Playing its first games since March 4, the King's College softball team wiped the dust off its bats and forged a split with visiting Oneonta State University in the Monarchs' home debut Monday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
Oneonta won the first game 6-3 while King's took the nightcap 5-3. With the split King's stands at 4-6 while Oneonta is 10-4.
In the opener, the Red Dragons used a two-home run, four RBI performance from Nicole Marzillo. The Red Dragons reached the scoreboard in the second when Katie Gorman and Marzillo hit back-to-back home runs. Oneonta padded the lead in the fourth when Marzillo belted a three-run home run.
King's pushed across three runs in the sixth Alizabeth Ashworth singled and Helena Suspic doubled . Both runners then scored off a double by
Amy Kowalczyk.
Debra Renner then stroked a RBI single to plate Kowalczyk, cutting the Oneonta lead to 5-3.
The Red Dragons, though, added an insurance run in the seventh to set the final score.
Renner led King's in the opener with two hits as King's managed just six hits in the game.
Rachel Linso took the pitching loss for King's, allowing five earned runs on six hits in three and one-third innings.
Allison Herbert pitched the final three and two-thirds, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
TurnerIn the nightcap, King's took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kowalczyk reached base on a fielder's choice and Renner walked.
Nicole Turner smacked a two-run double to put King's on top.
After Oneonta took a 3-2 lead in the top-of-the-fourth inning, King's came right back with two runs in the bottom half. Renner singled and Turner delivered a RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. Meagan Beaupre then came through with a RBI single to push the lead to 4-3.
King's added the final run of the game in the fifth when Supsic singled, moved got second on a sacrifice bunt by Bloom, and scored on a clutch single up the middle from Kowalczyk.
Bloom picked up the pitching win for King's, tossing the final three and two-thirds of scoreless relief.
Robyn Klingerman started for the Monarchs and went three and one-third innings, allowing three runs, one which was earned, on five hits.
Turner led King's offensively by going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Kowalczyk was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.
The Monarchs are next slated to play at Misericordia University Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in Dallas.
