WILKES-BARRE -- The host King's College softball team picked up a pair of much needed Freedom Conference victories as the Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of cross-town rival Wilkes University Thursday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the opener 11-3 in five innings before taking the nightcap 5-3.  With the wins King's improved to 9-10 overall and 5-3 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, fell to 6-14 and 2-6 in league competition.

In the opener, King's scored four runs in the second inning before adding five in the third en route to victory. Amy Kowalczyk was 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI while Helana Suspic finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Samantha Bloom, Shelby Eby, and Brianna DiMaggio added two hits apiece.

For Wilkes, Alex Hoops was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

In the nightcap King's scored all five of its runs in the second inning. DiMaggio, Supsic, and Kowalczyk all had RBI singles in the inning while Bloom added a sacrifice fly.

Wilkes scored once in the fifth and added two in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 but the Lady Colonels would draw no closer.
