King's Softball Drops Pair to Misericordia in Freedom Conference Openers

KING'S SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO MISERICORDIA IN FREEDOM OPENER

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Misericordia University in a Freedom Conference matchup Thursday at the Betzler Athletic Complex.

The Cougars won by scores of 7-3 and 5-3. With the losses, King's now stands at 4-8 overall and 0-2 in Freedom Conference play while Misericordia improved to 10-8 and 3-1 in league games.

In the opener King's jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Helana Supsic tripled and scored on a double by Samantha Bloom. Nicole Turner later followed with a RBI double of her own.

The Cougars responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning on the strength of three home runs. Sam Hare delivered a three-run shot and two batters later Meg Hardy and Melissa Parker drilled back-to-back solo homer runs to give Misericordia a 5-2.

The Cougars added a run in the second on a RBI single by Hardy to build a 6-2 lead. King's cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth when Alizabeth Ellsworth doubled and later scored from third on an infield ground out by Suspic. But the Cougars countered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Kristi Seiler singled and eventually scored fromn third on a sacrifice fly by Lori Brennan.

Both teams had 11 hits in the game. Bloom led King's with a 4-for-4 showing while Turner and Suspic were both 2-for-4. Rachel Linso was the losing pitcher for King's, allowing five runs, four which were earned, in one-third of an inning. Allison Herbert pitched well in relief, yielding two runs on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings

Hardy led the Cougars by going 3-for-4  while Hare was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brennan also had two hits for Misericordia. Alisa Steier was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap Misericordia used the long ball when Andi Veneziale hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Veneziale added a RBI double in a two-run third inning to stretch the lead to 4-0. 

King's got on the board in the fifth after a double by Shelby Eby and a RBI single from Brianna DiMaggio. But the Cougars again went long when Seiler hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to extend the score to 5-1. The Monarchs cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Debra Renner singled and later scored form third on an infield ground out by Rachel DeTore.  

King's looked to come back in the seventh  when Suspic reached first on a fielder's choice and later scored from third when Turner drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to 5-3. But with two outs and the bases still loaded, Megan Beaupre popped out to end the game.

Similarly to the first game both teams had 10 base hits in the contest. Kowalczyk, Renner, Turner, Eby, and DiMaggio all had two hits apiece for King's. Robyn Klingerman took the pitching loss for King's yielding four earned runs on nine hits in two and two-thirds innings. Herbert pitched the final three and one-third innings and allowed one hit and one earned run.

Veneziale was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Hardy and Hare were also 2-for-3. Maddie Stebich was the winning pitcher for Misericordia, going four and one-third innings and allowing one earned run on six hits.
